Alexander Payne's first movie in 6 years. Re-teaming with Paul Giamatti after their success together in the wild wine adventure Sideways.
Currently sitting at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes with 154 reviews. Oscar buzz for Giamatti and "a return to form" for Payne.
Plot synopsis: THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go.
Trailer here.
Opens wide this Friday!

Will it even be eligible for an Oscar under the new rules?

Really no way this isn't good.

It’s really good … acting is stellar including the newcomer.
Soundtrack and sets set the 70s mood

Where do you think it ranks in Payne's filmography?
Posted on 11/6/23 at 10:36 am to Kinderman
Top 4 imo … I’m a little biased though.

Good deal. I saw Gold Derby had it #2, just behind Sideways, which is wild considering the other great flicks he's made.

I think it being his first period film really elevates it as well in the canon
AP is a great person and happy he’s back after downsizing

Fiancé and I saw the matinee today. Probably my 2nd best movie of the year behind Oppenheimer, really enjoyed it. Great character study and they nailed the 70s feel with the way it was shot. That was actually the first Payne movie I have seen, will be checking out his other works

You’ve never seen Sideways? How is that even possible.
Election is a classic, and The Descendants is very good as well.

I felt the same. No doubt Giamatti will get a nomination, but Sessa did outstanding. Especially it being his first movie.

As an old boarding school kid, I will not miss this one. Just watching the trailer brought bakc a thousand memories.

We used 5 different schools on the project …. I had never been exposed to one until the production. Impressive history (the roosevelts went to one of them - Groton)

The thing about boarding schools, many of the kids are there because it's part of the family history, like admittance to an elite club, a right of passage. But to others, it's just because there is really something terrible going on back home. And there are kids who thrive and kids who just can't cope with it. The school I went to was very strict, very academically and physically rigorous, and coed. I absolutely thrived. It was like going off to college at 18, and in that era, replete with this kind of formality that was really impressive. College for me was kind of old hat, I'd done it 4 years earlier.
