So I finally started watching "The Batman" with Robert Pattinson

What I liked: He's actually Batman for a ton of the movie and he's a pretty good brooding Batman. The fighting scenes were somewhat realistic.
What I thought was meh: Pattinson still looked way too skinny and not very imposing in the suit. I could tell they were using camera angles and boxes to compensate.
What I thought was bad: Pattinson as emo Bruce Wayne. He was terrible here. I get "he is just learning how to be Batman" but he has always been Wayne and has already been Batman two years (which is the entirety of the Nolan version). He came across as pretty weak and insecure.
Overall, the direction of the movie was okay, though, at times was kinda pretentious, I guess because they were going the later Nolan + The Joker route.
Either way, the overall movie was pretty slow with way too much dialog.
Pattinson AS BATMAN and being in the suit so much really helped the movie, however.

The movie was 40 minutes too long.

I really like the first two acts. There's some really great batman stuff here. I wasn't a fan of the third act. It felt clunky and was far too long. I definitely think there was studio interference there.

Here's the thing though, as the filmmaker pointed out:
He's not really learning to be Batman. He's learning how to be Bruce Wayne. That's why they went the direction they did.

i don't think he was emo because "he is just learning how to be Batman". i chalk it up to him being young and the death of his parents is still fresh in his mind causing him to be fueled by depression, rage, and vengeance. at the end of the movie, he realizes who he really needs to be. i believe we'll see him turn into the playboy role in the next movie.
"I have had an effect here... but not the one I intended. Vengeance won't change the past. Mine or anyone else's. I have to become more. People need hope to know someone's out there for them. The city's angry... scarred... like me. Our scars can destroy us even after the physical wounds have healed. But if we survive them, they can transform us. They can give us the power to endure and the strength to fight."

Riddler being an incel YouTuber was pretty cringe

Most overrated movie on this board along with Mad Max Fury Road (and I really enjoyed Fury Road)
Also can’t believe the love I see for Tenet on this board either. That movie was absolute dog shite.

Absolutely. Bruce Wayne is overly chipper and outgoing. If he's dark and brooding, how is he an alter ego to Batman?

And today's billionaire philanthropists aren't the handsome fashion pates that we imagined in the 20th Century. Compared to the Musks and Bezoses, Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark as attractive semi-level-headed men are more of a stretch than their imaginary tech. (Though it's nice that they usually have more than one Batman going, and one Bruce Wayne who's the handsome guy from the pulp hero days.)

Is it really overrated here? I've rarely seen threads on it

I really enjoyed that movie. I was hyped about it when they were making it, then I got turned off by the publicity and the idea of a long-arse emo Batman movie (Robert Pattinson gave an interview where he talked about hanging out in his trailer in costume between takes, making odd electronic music). I ended up watching it on HBO Max and I regretted not seeing it in the theater. It did a good job of building off of the Christopher Nolan movies.

I thought once the riddler was caught the movie fell apart. He started singing, and I like Paul Dano but it was cringe as hell. And the final sequence of the flooding was meh. Also the joker scene sucked arse.

Sometimes I feel like he was still in the same headspace a method actor would be in after working on The Lighthouse

+1 that final act reeks of studio interference

You have it backwards. He's not learning how to be Batman, he's learning how to be Bruce Wayne. He isn't the playboy Bruce Wayne yet and doesn't care about really anything other than the Batman side of things. hence Alfred complaining/begging him to come to some meeting about money. He had no interest in that. The director made that clear.
The black eyes that make him actually look emo was just a real take on what would happen with his disguise. Reeves said that it bothered him that all the Batmans in the past clearly had eye black on so it blended in with the mask and then they took the mask off and they looked like they had just taken a shower. He wanted it to still be there to show what it'd actually look like after taking his mask off.

I love the Batman character so was pretty enthused about seeing it. Good Lord, was this terrible. It's like they made a movie to make you hate Batman. Patman has the personality of a wet sock. One of the main things in Batman comics and movies is that the Caped Crusader has always had the coolest looking costume and gadgets in all of superherodom. Patman looks like a frat boy going to a college Halloween party (I get he's just starting out as Batman. But, you gotta do better than this). The Batmobile looks like they spent $200 and a half hour at a South Central chop shop making the damned thing.
Also, in true Hollywood ham-handedness, the "good" characters (Gordon, Catwoman, etc) are POCs. Every "evil" character (Riddler, Penguin, etc) are white. Real subtle.

i enjoyed the EMO Bruce. We have 88 years of playboy Bruce. change it up. he's also going to work his way up to the playboy style anyway.

Because Bruce Wayne is the alter ego. Batman is what the guy is really like in life. Pattinson's character hasn't developed that alter ego yet.
