Renee Zellweger was great in "Cold Mountain". That opening scene with Kidman sitting on the porch with the rake to keep the rooster away and Zellweger simply walks up to it, grabs it and snaps the neck, then says "I hate a flogging rooster, let's put him in a pot". She owned that role from the very beginning.
For sure. Won an Oscar and deservedly so. That scene played out the same way in the book except Ruby says something like "He'll be stringy so we'll have to cook him long." I like the way the movie did it better.
All the secondary characters were great too. natalie Portman, Phillip Seymore Hoffman, Ben Foster, etc. Great cast.

I can attest to that. My sister-in-law asked me to remove a rooster she had since all the hens were killed by predators and she was tired of the damn thing crowing for the past 3 years.
I dispatched it, had my pot of hot water ready and dunked it in to loosen the feathers to be plucked and finished dressing it to cook. That damn rooster took HOURS to cook down enough to become edible in my chicken/sausage/okra gumbo.
Yard birds a way different than what you get in the markets------darker meat, less fat, much smaller breasts and usually need to be cooked much longer-------but the flavor is well worth it in the end.

Deep Impact featured some great actors and was a well-executed film overall.

It was overshadowed by Armageddon but a solid movie.
