It was glorious, but I say that as someone who wasn't an adult with a mortgage & kids. I never got the sense that it was bad at all but I only saw my piece of it.

there's a lot of copium going on in progressive circles trying to retcon the 80s and 90s as some sort of hellscape in order to gaslight people into thinking our current dystopia is actually great by comparison. this goes for more than just entertainment.

He's only a few years older than I am, but he and I clearly didn't grow up in the same 80s. Because mine were fricking badass awesome.
I don't know RR obviously, but I almost don't believe for a second that he believes that.

I was a teenager in the '80s. Despite my family's economic struggles, it was an amazing time to be alive. I was in the United States Navy in the '90s. I had a pretty good time then, too, traveling the world by aircraft carrier. Take a show like Lanterns, that has tried to paint the '90s as hopelessly racist. That view is complete nonsense. For my generation, and from my experience in the '80s and '90s, no one gave a shite about race like that.

Yeah. Terrible take from him. Especially given he was barely a teenager by the 90s.

The dude lived in Canada until the mid 90's when he moved to LA... WTF is he blabbing about.
Sure, the 80's may have sucked in Canada, but here it was a huge pivot point to greater times. The 80/90s are prob the two best decades for American's all around.

My friend's wife works as a travel liaison for the ultra wealthy. She has to sign NDA's prohibiting her from disclosing who she's worked for specifically, but she did say that he and to a greater extent Blake Lively are known in the industry as truly awful people to work for.

What he's saying is simply not true. It wasn't perfect by any means but compared to today it was pretty tame, especially in the sense of politics not being injected into just about everything. Social media probably has a hand in that I would guess

Every era has brutal, brutal times for people. The 80s, however, didn't choose in its arts and entertainment to wallow in it and preach. (There were too many preachers running around in the 80s already)

I mean the leftist big cities were urban hellscapes of crime due to unchecked crack use and reduced policing.
The middle class was still thriving.
The suburbs were safe.
The political climate was amusingly tame compared to our current climate.
The left and right didnt hate each other.
Women didnt think men were oppressors.
This is just textbook hollywood political drivel.
Stay in your lane, tell jokes and enjoy your fortune.

The middle class still held the largest percentage of wealth in the country. It has been on a downward slide since late 70's. The data is there.
Pop culture had an identity. The 80s was the last decade pre-internet. Because of that, the world was smaller and our communities meant more to us because it's all we knew outside of 30 minutes of the nightly news and the Sunday paper. People were happier with the things they had because they weren't constantly being told through advertising and social media about all of the shite they don't have.

He’s spot on. The 80’s was a brutal decade for our country.
- The Soviet invasion of 84. Nuked a few cities.
- The Nakatomi hostage incident in 1988
- The attempted assassination of Queen Elizabeth at the Angles game in 1988
