Not nearly as that image represents. Look at the graph a little more critically, the problem was the large cities. The difference between that and the national average is so great it likely skews the national average quite a bit. Most of the country wasn't made up of people living in cities with populations of 250k+ at that time, most lived in either smaller towns or in suburbs.
Not sure of what the deal was prior to the 80s, but that big surge coming in the mid-80s was the explosion of crack cocaine and the resulting gang warfare over turf in major cities (especially LA).

Im 3 years older than him and I remember the early 80s but after 1984, I was old enough to remember everything.
The 80's was an awesome time to grow up in.

I lived start of 80s on the Westbank in New Orleans. Things were pretty bad. My father got his engineering degree at LSU in the late 70s and then worked at several refineries along the river while the oil industry was crashing. We eventually had to move overseas so he could find work.
My grandparents lived by Audubon park and dudes would just break in while they were sleeping and rob them at gunpoint. Multiple times - until they put bars up. Then they would get robbed in the driveway at daylight. No one would buy the house. New owner sold it recently for $3m.
I tried going to LSU but the school had no money. The campus was falling apart. I would register for classes that ended up getting cancelled day one from lack of interest.
The 80s were not gold paved streets - but movies & music were better, anyone could own a house and two cars, and the national debt was a fraction of the GDP - however we didn't have a debt before the 80s.

Then I wonder why so many people still pine for that era?

Sure, if you define them by one metric.
But that would be stupid.

Freaking LarryTCG had to set Ryan straight

Cuban Missile crisis? Uh no most of us didn’t worry about it. I only talked about it in history class because it was over in 1962! However I did worry in the 80’s about getting that swatch watch I wanted that was sold out. Gimme a break. The 80’s were awesome. The 80’s like any decade had some challenges but we just came outa the Vietnam war era and it was like a total relief. From Reagan to the fall of Soviet Union, to some of the best classic movies and songs. Nobody getting cancelled for saying dumb stuff. Nobody dropping f bombs as loud as they could at the mall food court because most people at least still knew how to act in public. I was 17 Feb 17 1980. Some of the greatest memories of my life. It was like living in a John Hughes movie before I ever knew who he was. I don’t know what Canada was like for this guy in the 80’s but for most of us that grew up in the states in the 80’s it was pretty awesome and if I had a chance and was granted 1 week to go back in time I’d head straight to 1985 even though I was dead broke. I’m sure x will have the normal people bitching and moaning about this post because they live in a constant state of anger but just like in the 80’s I could care less about or have time for idiots that hate everything . The 80’s rocked. Now excuse me while I pop on some Night Ranger and a little Huey topped with some classic Strait. Let’s Git-r-done!

bringing up the Cuban Missile Crisis as proof of how terrible the 80s was is an all-time retarded celebrity comment. i can sort of get behind Cold War fears as negative aspect of the 80s (even that is a stretch), but to act like the CMC is part of that is laughable.

Canadians suck at everything, even the 80s.
Posted on 9/3/26 at 1:54 pm to Saint Alfonzo
I think this is a case of everyone thinking the era when they were kids was better than the era when they were adults and this is just a case of Reynolds repeating the stories adults from the 80's are telling him while he prepared for the role.

1991-1995 aside from LSU Football was some of the best 5 years in US history. Same with somewhere around 1984-2004.
