I'm not sure he'd want to starve to death though. He was okay with that fate when it was "I'll save the Earth but won't get home," but I think he'd at least push to where his food supplies were down to pretty low levels and stay as long as he could.

If you follow the biblical narrative, he does eventually return to earth.

Disagree that he wasn't happy on Earth. He definitely was. Sure, he wasn't married or dating anyone, but he loved teaching kids at his school. And in a rewatch of the movie it seems as if they were ALMOST hinting at some subtle feelings between him and Stratt (and I don't remember that being hinted at at all in the book). But it was also home to literally everything he's ever known.
I go back and forth on whether or not I think he tries to go home. I do think eventually he'd attempt to go home as he'd get tired of life on Erid despite having found one of the things that makes him happy (teaching the Erid kids about science).
I think the cool thing is that I'm good either way. If he decided to stay there forever, that would be cool too.
Excellent, excellent movie.

You've mention biblical narrative and Catholic themes twice now with no explanation. The author himself has stated there is no biblical messaging and hidden themes. Like Tolkien, he is not a fan of allegory but fans always make the comparisons.
There are obvious things like simply the title having Hail Mary in it. Grace as his name. You could stretch it and say Rocky's name is biblical in meaning. You could say Grace is a prophet or Messiah like character.
Just because you can make these comparisons doesn't mean that's what they were written as. Because the author has told us they weren't.

I’m just glad we finally got another sci fi movie with some optimism. Not surprising in that case that Weir also wrote The Martian. That both were very well crafted with great performances will hopefully inspire more like them in the genre.

It’s common for authors to not tell their secrets.
It’s also mixed in with some Greek mythological themes as well.
Key words that are fun to look up:

You can add themes as the last supper karaoke, keep watch while sleeping, darkness dots eat light,
save humanity with even some reluctance, religious holy music background, Erid a celestial state, three on a mission (Moses and Elijah) as reps of transfiguration…you’d have to ignore it all at this point not to see it.

Except he actually straight forward denied it on a podcast. This sin't a keeping it close to the vest thing. He genuinely dislikes allegory. Much less basing his entire book off of it. But like with Tolkien/LOTR, fans love to take it and run with it. Yo can do similar things with tons of stories over the years.

I just really love how he was given 3 hours to decide if he wanted to go on a suicide mission but Rocky told him "think a long time" when deciding if he was ready to go home.
Thats as lovely an ending to a sci-fi movie I've seen in a while. Not to mention he sacrificed himself for Rocky at the end - something he was unwilling to do for humanity at one point.

For anybody wanting more Rocky, I cannot recommend the audiobook enough. This was one of the best adaptations as far as capturing the events of the book, but they did cut some very interesting scenes and a lot of the science is fleshed out more.

Never read the book. I understand wanting to protect the integrity of art by not running straight to symbolism, but I don’t know what else to tell you pertaining to the film’s representation.
