Just saw it, one of the best and most original (for a movie) I have seen in a long time. Rocky was so well done.
Rocky was well done, just a few misses on the questions dialog. Rocky always ended a question with the word question. It became part of his personality in the book. That is so minor as to not worry much about, I really enjoyed the movie and book.

I hate to be that guy, but the movie left so much stuff out from the book. A lot of that could've been touched in short order. I get the movie was long, but if they didn't want to do 2 movies, maybe add 20-25 minutes to cover these things a bit.
I agree. The style of the movie was infantilized making it feel like a Ryan Gosling/Rocky buddy-cop movie compared to the stranded scientist slowly regaining his memory and overcoming the challenges they faced. There was never a sense of dread or fear they won't accomplish the mission.
Book comes across as PG-13 but the movie seemed PG. I get it, they're hitting a larger audience (especially once it hits Amazon Prime) and little kids will love Rocky in space (like Wall-E)

It completely honored the source material while trimming all it could for non-book readers.
I don’t think this is true. There was a lot they could’ve touched on in 20 more minutes of run time IMO.
I still had fun. Great movie experience. Just felt some things from the book were sorely missing.

Maybe it’s just me but I thought they were done for when they released the tanks and again when we first saw the bacteria escaped. Grace decides to go save Rocky and the audience thinks he’s giving up his life to do it
You also aren’t viewing the film through the lens of someone who watched the movie first. It really shouldn’t feel like a super suspenseful movie when there’s a talking rock
As for adding another 20 minutes, it would’ve been way too long for the general audience at 3 hours run time

I enjoyed it
Glad they didn’t bore everyone with the hardcore science and just did what they needed to do
A few of those scenes are amazing.

No way in hell they could have added 20-25 minutes without losing the general audience. My wife has not read the book and enjoyed the movie a good bit, but she already thought it was a bit too long and could have been edited a bit to tighten things up. And making it two movies would be absolutely ridiculous, there isn't nearly enough book for that.
Sure, I wish they could have added more stuff from the book, but a frigging 3 hour version of this movie isn't accessible to the general audience and isn't making money.

That’s true and something I didn’t think about with a fresh set of eyes.
I knew what was going to happen, but in the book he debated for a long time going back. Calculating the risks and probabilities.
If he turned around, he was not going back to earth regardless if he couldn’t find rocky. And there was a major chance he wouldn’t be able to find Rocky’s ship since it went dark.
I’m nitpicking. But I also wish they did a better job displaying the passage of time on a subtitle or something (one month later, one week later, etc)

From what I’ve read, the movie’s run time literally pushes the IMax film limit.
Oppenheimer apparently used a first of its kind reel to achieve its duration.

The missus didnt read/listen to the book but loved the movie.. I think more so than I did..
Just my opinion but this is how I prefer to go into these things. It was awesome not knowing anything at all about this movie and being surprised by everything. Now I might listen to the audiobook to get all the details
Same here.
I really really enjoyed this movie but it was an 8.5/10 for me (book reader) and it was a 10/10 for my wife (walking in blind.)
That seems like a chasm but we both really enjoyed it. We both will see it again in theaters and that doesn’t happen a ton.
I think the last movie we did that with was Endgame.

The movie was already too long IMO. I saw the movie twice and feel like it really does drag a bit in the second half one it does feel a little bit of 1 song to another to another for line 20 minutes

You don't think they honored the source simply because there were a few things that they left out and didn't make it a 3 hour long movie? Good parts are left out of every adaption, it's just the nature of the beast but that was a very faithful adaption.

Saw this yesterday. It lives up to the hype.

It wasn't a "few things". It was a shitload.
Again, I enjoyed the movie experience a lot. Just disappointed in some big things not even being mentioned or barely mentioned.
Movie didn't feel long to me, despite the runtime.

The Audiobook was ~16 hours long. The film is 2.5 hours long. Of course a lot of material is going to be cut. The question is what's the least you can have in the movie and make it a faithful interpretation of the book. I think they did a pretty good job for the most part.

Andy Weir, the book’s author, sent Gosling the pre-publication manuscript because he was already thinking it would be a movie; and he wanted Gosling to play Ryland Grace.

Went see it with the wife, we both loved it from start to finish
Funny thing is when I told her we were going she watched a trailer on her phone and ended up watching the first trailer which has no mention of Rocky so she had no idea it had an alien in it haha she thought it was a horror movie when Rocky first showed up

For those curious, this video does a good job explaining time dilation and how it plays into the story:

That's a great video. I was aware that time slowed down as you approach light speed but was not aware that it's exponential if you maintain the speed. That blew my mind.

Love how he throws in the Mass Effect galaxy map music at the ~5:00 minute mark when it pulls out to the map of the galaxy.
