Random thought. I assume Grace sent information back with the beetles about meeting Rocky, working with him, and going back to help Rocky save his home planet.
We know in the final scene it has been about 70 years since he left earth, and like 44 years since the beetles.
Grace is 51ish now. So if when he’s 60 he decided to go back, it would be well over 100 years after he left.
That means when he showed up, he’d be like a living folk hero. There would be “classic” movies about his exploits, TV shows, etc. An actual living legend from 100 plus years in the past.

as that supposed to be the message I got about his decision to not go on an actual hail Mary space mission to save the planet, spend the rest of your days miserable, and starve to death, for an almost zero percent chance to succeed?
They all were given the means to commit suicide instead of starving to death if they chose that route. I haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know if that part of the book is in the movie.

I forgot to revisit the thread after seeing it.
I took my 6.5 year old son to this a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it. He really liked it too. And it absolutely did not deserve a PG-13 rating at all.
I thought they were about as true to the book as they could have been for the most part. And my, like I assume everyone else's as well, biggest point of interest was how the handled/portrayed Rocky. And I thought they did a great job with him.
Obviously some parts felt rushed, but that's expected when you condense a book into a movie. But just about everything about it was really good IMO.
I wondered how they would handle the ending...if they would change anything or have him come back home. But they left it open-ended just like the book with him living on Erid but having the option to travel back home.
I'll definitely be watching this movie again, and may even read the book again.

I’m in the minority but for popular books that are now movies I always see the movie first to enjoy it more.
Then I can’t wait to go read the book for additional details
It might just be me, but nothing is more annoying than the book snob bitching over every single line of dialogue missing from the movie.

quote:agree. Finally got around to seeing this last night. And that was the first thing I thought of. This was a story of friendship of man and alien written around a science problem plot.
I’m not sure if this has been said already—and I’m not claiming it’s better—but Project Hail Mary feels like the closest thing my kids’ generation has gotten to ET.

Watched. Decent movie. Yes, Rocky was cheesy like the spider in the Adam Sandler movie. It was a good movie but I wouldn’t rewatch and I think it’s far from the cult like appreciation it gets on this board.

Watching it now. Like it so far, definitely more whole family friendly than the book. Not that the book has anything bad in it, they just kidded it up a little.
A scene for scene movie would have been a terrible idea, but as a book reader, it would have been great, even if it was 14 hours long.

And I think Stratt blew up the other two science astronauts to make sure Grace went.
She knew Grace was the best shot and it was the only way to make it happen.

I thought it dragged in some scenes but overall I would still give it an A. Might be Gosling's best performance.

The restraint shown by Mrs. Vox yesterday at not buying this on digital yet is impressive. She's borderline obsessed with PHM.
She wants the physical Blu-ray release with all of the extras, at the end of the summer.

This will definitely be a DVD purchase from me. 100%.
And as soon as it is streaming for free on one of the services, I plan on watching it again with my son.

I felt the same way after the first watch. The pacing felt better the second time. I presume when they cut the movie they didn't feel the slight drags since they knew what was going to happen.

Saw it in the theater and loved it. Watched it again last night at home, still loved it. I do have 1 tiny gripe. I haven't read the book, but I'm going to assume they portray him as a coward better than in the movie. Watching the movie I didn't buy that Grace would not go on the mission. He seemed like a good, logical, caring dude. I mean if the mission fails the Earth is going to die anyway and he has no family.

It more or less plays out the same way as in the book. You never see much “I’m a coward” until the reveal, I guess because the whole coma/one way ticket issue, (which he tells Stratt is the only option when she’s struggling with making people do it), isn’t his problem until it becomes his problem.
If anything they amp up the weak nerdiness of Grace in the movie.
