Confusing mess?
Yea most decent movies that cover history are going to be confusing for idiots.
Sorry for being a dumb arse when they kept jumping back and forth between different moments of Oppenheimer's life and being unaware who Strauss was. I didn't know Strauss was an important part of history that I should of been aware of prior to this movie.

There was nothing confusing about this movie. It was presented in such a way that it evolved and made total sense.

I had nonidea who strauss was but I figured it out as the movie went in.
it took me a minute to figure out that we had 1 thread of scenes going through Oppeheiner’s life, bouncing back to portions of his AEC hearing and 1 bouncing to Strauss’s Congressional hearing for his cabinet appointment.
overall I wnjoyed the movie.
honestly i wanted more about the German’s weapons program but what i’ve read since I saw the Movie the Germans were way off and not close.

No doubt. Seems like the dude was involved in some high level shite from everything I’ve read about him.

I love Nolan movies. This was as boring as it gets. This movie watched like a monotone voice telling a story that doesn’t take a breath. There was nothing that provoked any feelings towards any of the characters. It just wasn’t dramatic at all. I’ll never watch that movie again unless I need something to fall asleep to. The most entertaining thing in that movie was the JFK revelation.

This film reminded me a ton of There Will Be Blood with the score and sound mixing (the bleacher stomp scene reminded me of the scene when HW loses his hearing), as well as the theme of man bending nature to his will and how doing so corrupts man (the oil turned Daniel into a greedy monster and the bomb made Oppenheimer melancholic and regretful). And the length
Felt more like a bigger budget There Will Be Blood/PTA movie than a mind bending Nolan flick.

quote:I wondered if the movie was actually set in an alternate universe where Oppenheimer was right and us and the Soviets really did nuke each other, and that was shown in the ending
I said it earlier in the thread but I felt dread.
Basically it's foreshadowing our eventual demise.

Both Murphy and RDJ should be locks for an Oscar. Absolutely phenomenal movie.

We just got home from a 9:30 start time.
Damn! What an absolutely brilliant film. 9.5/10.

I went in not knowing anything about Oppenheimer or the Manhattan project so I was clueless about him having communist ties and being demonized later on for not approving the hydrogen bomb.
I haven't seen the movie, but another physicist (Edward Teller) testified against him saying Oppie shouldn't be trusted with a security clearance since he was a commie. Oppenheimer did not deny being involved in communist groups when he was younger but claimed he had no ties to the Soviets and was not a spy. Government pulled his clearance and pretty much ended his career. (Edward Teller was the main guy behind the H-bomb).
Now we need a movie about John Von Neumann.

Watched it Friday night and could have watched it again the next night. Incredible flick. Figured I could only be disappointed with how much hype I had going in but it delivered on all accounts.
I enjoyed pretty much everything about it but was pretty surprised the wife was indifferent. She thought it bounced around a little too much and the side characters became muddled/harder to keep up with. I can get that gripe though. Neither of us had an issue with the length.
Big nipples. Still nice though.

Not every movie needs a non-linear narrative just for the sake of it

‘Transformers 8’ was just down the hall.

I think this movie benefitted from it greatly.

Maybe the next Fast and Furious movie is more your speed.
This movie was phenomenal and gripping. We all knew everything that was going to happen and it still left me on the edge of my seat. That’s incredibly hard to do for something thats based on past events that doesn’t reveal anything “unknown”

I've seen all three Batman films, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk and loved all of them.
I also loved House of the Dragon (which is 90% people talking in rooms)
Can we stop insulting people because their taste in movies may not be the same as yours?
I'll admit that while I haven't seen Tenet, this movie really didn't feel like Nolan's best work.
He tried to take what is a relatively dry, boring story and spruce it up a bit in typical Nolan fashion with the non-linear narrative and sweeping score, but it just comes off as unnecessary in a biopic about a scientist who made the atomic bomb. The bombastic music playing during all the dialogue was especially bad.

I left wanting to read everything I could find on Robert Oppenheimer. He seems almost like a mythical character. Brilliant, complex, tortured, talented, patriotic, etc…not to mention interesting things that happened to him with the government persecution and the red scare stuff.
Not sure how you could like Nolan, watch this, and think it was a dud. You’re right. It’s personal taste but I legit feel bad if you didn’t enjoy that movie.
It’s as good a biopic as I can remember. Maybe it just hit me differently but I had no idea Oppenheimer the man was as interesting as he was. Totally left me wanting more. I’ve been reading all about all the little tid bits that came up throughout the movie in my spare time since Saturday night.
ETA: US history/politics is a hobby/passion of mine so obviously that resonates with me. I can watch movies with congressional hearings and investigations all day.
