I watch Full Metal Jacket for the boot camp scenes. He's on to something there. I wouldn't call the Vietnam war portion a dud, but it does lag behind other Vietnam movies in comparison. Definitely not overrated though.
I'm disappointed in myself though, because I haven't watched the other movies enough to judge his criticisms.

1. Full Metal Jacket 2. Hana-bi 3. Lost Highway 4. Psycho 5. Chungking Express 6. The Big Blue 7. The Thin Red Line 8. Dark City 9. Citizen Kane 10. Natural Born Killers
I agree with all of those. 2,3,5 and 6 I've never seen, but Natural born killers and Dark City, I never thought of as overrated or underrated.

all media is derivative…I haven’t seen much (any) German expressionism but dark city is a movie that has stuck with me for decades and I’ve only watched it once.
I can’t say that about any other movie most likely

It's a solid list. He's not trying to make friends or create a stir. Relevant reasons for most and I agree on probably all but Dark City and maybe Psycho. For Dark City, over time, the hype cooled down and it's appropriately remembered.
Psycho - I don't agree with his comments directly on the film, but I do agree with that idea that Hitchcock has double digit films better than it, and better films for "all-time" lists. Spot on there.

Thin Red Line is your typical Malick masturbating to himself, thinking he’s God’s gift to humanity but it sucks
Natural Born Killers sucks too, I hate that movie

Other thank CK for the sake of movie making and what it lead to, I don’t disagree that strongly.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket is so great that I actually do think it compensates for the lackluster second part, and keeps the film from
being overrated.

He's not wrong about a few those titles (Lost Highway, The Thin Red Line, NBK), but I think he's also critiquing some unduly with a modern perspective (Psycho, Citizen Kane).

I think Park was still a film critic at the time. He made 2 small movies that didn't hit (and are regarded as not good though I haven't seen them) then became a critic before directing his breakthrough JSA in 2000.
He's one of my favorite living directors. I just rewatched Stoker last night.

I absolutely love this director's work, but I don't agree with much on this list.
He published this 10 in 1999. I can't i.agine he would include Lost Highway, NBK, or Dark City on such a list now. NBK's reputation has waned. Dark City feels barely remembered by most. Lost Highway is the forgotten child among Lynch's acclaimed films.
No blurbs for the three foreign films?
Hana-bi's English name is Fireworks. It's a pretty cool Japanese police/crime drama. It must have been a much bigger deal in Korea than it was here.
Same with the Big Blue, an earlier Luc Besson film I've never seen, and have never heard people talk about.
Chungking Express is an incredibly important film in the context of 90s world cinema, but the director released an even more important one in 2000, In the Mood for Love.
It'd be cool to see a more recent version of this list. More directors should agree to publish such things. It's fun content. I feel like only Tarantino and Soderbergh regularly do stuff like this.

That’s basically how I feel about every malick movie I’ve seen. I remember hearing great things about tree of life I think on here and it was like a 2 hour movie that felt like 4. It’s the same for all the others I’ve seen.

You know what movie is vastly overrated? Old Boy

I've only seen two Malick movies: The Thin Red Line and The New World. Both of them were overlong, overwrought, and very pretentious. Christopher Plummer said it best when he was asked about it at an Oscars Roundtable some years back:

I've only seen Full Metal Jacket, Psycho, Thin Red Line, Citizen Kane, and Natural Born Killers. Agree with all but Psycho. Only one I didn't enjoy too much was Natural Born Killers. Yall can go ahead and downvote me, but I don't get the love at all for that movie.

I've never considered Natural Born Killers to be that highly regarded. It's interesting, but I wouldn't call it good by any means

I'm right there with him about NBK, though. It's a perfect example of 90's degenerate mind rot. I think Oliver Stone would have been really happy if it had inspired scores of copycat killing sprees. 'It makes you want to kill somebody' is a comment I heard more than once. It was one of those movies that a lot of my friends liked, but I hated.

FMJ kills off its only interesting characters before the 2nd half of the film then tries to carry the rest with the comedic relief guy from the first half and it just falls flat.

Yeah, well, what does this guy know? Oldboy was good, sure, but Stoker? And has any movie been more pretentious than Snowpiercer? Glass houses, man, glass houses.

Snowpiercer is Bong Joon-ho.
Park Chan-Wook directed Decision to Leave, Joint Security Area, Lady Vengeance, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, The Handmaiden and Thirst. I recommend them all. Even Stoker which I think is the only one he didn't right. It's weird in the exact way I want it to be weird.
