Pushing back on the idea that Top Gun: Maverick is in the same league as Terminator fricking 2 is a crap opinion?

T2 isn't exactly Citizen Kane, neither is Aliens. I don't see why it's such a big deal to compare this Top Gun sequel to them

One question, because we didn't stay for the rolled credits, is it specifically spelled out anywhere that Penny is in fact Penny Benjamin? I know that has been the assumption, but I never heard her last name mentioned in the movie, and in the photo credits at the end she is just listed as Penny.

It would be kind of a weird move for them to have some different Penny, don’t you think?

They mention their previous relationship several times throughout the movie

If there were a real reason to that would be fine. That it’s not woke and the actors really got in the planes do not qualify.

I have to say it's up there with T2. I've watched t2 dozens of times and it's legacy was tarnished by further sequels. This gave a Favorite 80s character a BETTER movie.
I haven't met anyone who didn't like this movie. It was a call back to the early 90s action flick. I still can't believe it lived up to and exceeded the hype from all those years.

So glad they held this movie two years.

We’re a post or two away from one of you insisting it’s better than Back to the Future

Back to the future 2 wasn't as good as BTTF.

T2 and Maverick were superior to their original movie.

Turbo-charged 4th wknd for #TopGunMaverick with amazing $44M slipping a ridiculously low 15%! SUN estimated to rise above SAT thx to #FathersDay. 2nd biggest 4th Wknd of all-time behind only $50.3M of #Avatar in 2010. Domestic #boxoffice cume shoots up to $466.2M thru today.

Only one movie in #boxoffice history has ever grossed more in its 4th wknd than #TopGunMaverick's $44M - #Avatar with $50.3M from JAN 2010. Every #Marvel, every #StarWars, every #Jurassic, every #Batman did LESS in its 4th wknd. This is not normal, folks! #TopGun #TomCruise

I finally saw it. Enjoyed it enormously in spite of a few plot holes.

He doesn't make high art but Tom Cruise might be the last reliable entertainer left in Hollywood. I am just so happy to have enjoyed a movie that wanted to be a movie.

You're welcome to have your own opinion

I think this is the best summer blockbuster movie, since Infinity War at least. And you knew Infinity War had a sequel, so that left you waiting; this was self-contained.

It's had about 2 years of hype, and yet somehow ALMOST everyone seems to think it lived up to that.
It proved you don't have to go with superheroes or Star Wars (I won't even say scifi, since movies other than SW in that genre have disappointed).

And while the other plotlines might not be amazing, I thought they did a good job on things. I liked his moment on the sailboat with Penny, it's nothing they had to put in at all, but it worked. Like he said, he might be navy, but he lands on boats, he doesn't sail them. They do a good job with that scene, and you could imagine an older Maverick getting into sailboats and transferring some of his passion over to it.
I liked him working on his Mustang, too. This film just fleshed him out a bit, didn't change anything from the original.

I don't see it as competing with any other movie, I don't think that should bother anyone. It's a different movie than T2 or Aliens, because those are chapters in what because franchises. This is more of the bookend of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's tale. Top Gun was his beginning, this is the end of his professional part of his life. He goes out on top, reconciles with his surrogate "son", and finally settles in with an old flame he'd apparently been crossing paths with since he was a young buck.

It's just a pleasant, happy, entertaining film.

Jen Connelly has said in interviews a couple of places that her character is Penny Benjamin.

Is it the military aspect of this that trigger you or that it wasn’t a women or minority who saved the day?

Saw it again last night with my little stallions and theater was packed (on a Tuesday)

Also, on rewatch, Hangman is such a great great character

He’s unapologetically cocky and toxic.

He good. He’s REALLY good.

She’s 51 so either Mav was hitting on an 12 or 13 year old Penny in the original or Jennifer Connelly is too young for the part.

Exactly my point.

If the movie had been released in 2020 as originally planned, she would have been 49, and Cruise would have been 58. Original movie came out in 1986, when Cruise was 24 (believable for his character), but Connelly was 15.

Add 4-5 years to her character's age and she would be in her mid-50s. So it's conceivable that she could have been the mother of a pre-teen. Probably should've made the kid 17, which would have been less of a stretch.

Does everyone understand that the actors are playing fictional characters? Fictional characters that may not be the same age as the actor? Who says Penny isn't 55-56 in TG-Maverick? Who says Maverick isn't exactly the same age? This happens all the time. Especially in biopics when we know the characters age, rarely is the actor the same age (see Ray, Walk the Line, etc.). How this thread got hijacked over the actors' ages I just don't understand.
