Interesting theory, Maverick was dead after the Darkstar explosion, the rest was a death dream.

I explained why. It’s not that I really dislike the movie per se, it’s fine. It’s the over the top praise that’s completely unwarranted and what I’m really responding to. I heard someone seriously suggest it’s possibly the best sequel of all time the other day, which nearly made me spit my drink out. People think this is in the same category as Terminator 2? Aliens? Is that a joke?

Dude, why is it someone comes into a thread who clearly has a minority or contrast point of view on a topic and proceeds to throw slight jabs at the topic or the posters?

I just don't understand this behavior.

well.... I like Terminator 2, Aliens, etc. You know, those aren't necessarily Oscar-worthy scripts, either. There are holes to be punched in plots. They were what they were, VERY FUN action movies.

So was this. Different genre, more upbeat. This happened to be released at a time when we could use a more upbeat, highly entertaining movie without any guilt or accusations being dumped on the audience. Is it the best sequel ever? No, probably not... it may well be one of the best-timed releases of any movie ever, though.

As for how the summer blockbuster movies have fallen- this is a movie about fighter jets, and their elite cocky pilots. You could have CGI'd anything into it, but instead we got tons of live footage of the aircraft in action. That's the overlay of Top Gun, and it delivered again. As good as the first one was for that, this one surpassed it by a good margin.

Loved the movie. It was intense to watch all the flying scenes, felt like I was in the plane. Really liked how the end mission had a build up opposed to the original movie.

Yeah I’m not comparing a top gun movie to something by the coen brothers or anything. But even when compared to others in it’s class it’s remarkably average.

That it doesn’t do something worse movies do is not an argument as to why it’s a great movie.

That’s all great but that’s really just the technical aspect of the film. It doesn’t lose points but by itself that doesn’t make a movie.

Again I don’t hate the movie or anything. It’s fine. Way better than, off the top of my head, the 2014 Robocop reboot. But it’s just flatly not in the same class as the heavy hitter type sequels and summer blockbusters of years gone by like the ones I’ve mentioned. It just isn’t and it’s not particularly close.

Pushing back on the idea that Top Gun: Maverick is in the same league as Terminator fricking 2 is a crap opinion?

Calling an average movie average is the opposite of a hot take

Being that guy and going completely against the grain is in fact a hot take. But thanks for repeating yourself yet again.

Finally saw this on Sunday, and so glad I did (and got to see it in the theater). I certainly think that this is one of those movies that needs to be seen on the big screen.

I was 10 when the first movie came out, and have been a fan since I first saw it. This was the perfect sequel to it, and the perfect summer popcorn flick.

Were there things that could be nitpicked to death? Of course. For starters TOPGUN is no longer in Miramar/North Island, it's in Fallon, Nevada and Miramar became a Marine Corp Air Station. But for nostalgia sake, and to tie in with the OG movie, it is fine for it to be there.

I loved the nostalgia/fan service/throwbacks.
-Top Gun Anthem/Danger Zone opening
-Rooster in the camp shirt at the piano like his dad
-Silhouette of the planes on the carrier elevator

They were well done and mostly subtle enough to make you smile and see the connection without impacting the plot line (looking at you The Force Awakens).

I would have loved Maverick to have had a particular maneuver or something that got all of the pilots in dogfighting and one of the last ones to get locked would have used the "I hate it when [s]he does that," line Goose used when Mav tells him Charlie has lost that loving feeling.

One question, because we didn't stay for the rolled credits, is it specifically spelled out anywhere that Penny is in fact Penny Benjamin? I know that has been the assumption, but I never heard her last name mentioned in the movie, and in the photo credits at the end she is just listed as Penny.

I’ve explained my reasoning in more detail any everyone else in this thread combined.

An analysis you don’t like is not automatically a “hot take”
