After years of resisting advertisements on its streaming service, Netflix is now “open” to offering lower-priced tiers with ads, co-CEO Reed Hastings said Tuesday.

Hastings has long been opposed to adding commercials or other promotions to the platform but said during the company’s prerecorded earnings conference call that it “makes a lot of sense” to offer customers a cheaper option.

“Those who have followed Netflix know that I have been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription,” Hastings said. “But as much as I am a fan of that, I am a bigger fan of consumer choice, and allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are advertising-tolerant to get what they want makes a lot of sense.”

I'm honestly surprised they haven't done this already.

I mean...just don't get the ad version. One would ASSUME the ad version would be significantly cheaper.

Assume.

I have the cheap Peacock streaming service...just added it back to watch "Killing It". They run ads in 30 second chunks. Each 30 minute show has two or three 30-second breaks...which is bearable. What I hate are the 90-second to 2-minute ad breaks that a lot of other streaming services have.

But their (most streaming services with ads) goal in the streaming ads are no longer to get you to buy the advertised product...they are to piss you off enough to pay extra for the ad-free version.

You can still keep your same ad-free plan. They're just offering a cheaper option that includes ads.

I don't see why offering consumers more options is a bad thing.

Naw, they will add ads to the current tier and then add a new, more expensive ad free tier.

Netflix has already dealt with a corporate raider escapade 10 years ago when they had to institute a poison pill to fend off Carl Icahn from buying out the company from under them.

Elon can't really buy them. Plus, he doesnt have the money anyway. I think Netflix has about $100B market cap...and that's with shares down $128 just this week.

He's just trolling now... And it's fabulous.

The price isn't the problem. HBO max is doing just fine. The content just sucks. Who thinks having blacks play 19th century brits is a good idea? BET wouldn't even do that.

I knew they were fricked the minute they put Susan Rice on the board.

So streaming services are going the way of cable. I remember when cable first started becoming a thing. "You won't have to pay for ads because you're paying for cable!". Lies.

So streaming is slowly becoming like cable. If only we could, I don't know, bundle these streaming apps together and access them with one central service...

Evolution, finds a way...

It wasn't bad when they had the counter in the top corner that let you know how long the commercial break was. You could see you have 90 seconds, so you can run and do.... Now, they have 5/6 ads at once all with different times and the timer is for the specific ad. Annoys the shite out of me and if it wasn't free w/ my Verizon plan I'd have dropped it awhile ago.

This is actually one of their most popular shows…

If you can't afford $10/mo and need a cheaper plan, you should spend your down time re-evaluating your life choices and set some long term goals, not wasting time watching TV.
