Don't know how any sort of revival, reboot, etc works without Whedon. He seemed to be the driving creative force behind the show.

Has anyone heard even a peep from Whedon about all this?

I don't think anyone's heard a peep out of Whedon at all. Last I heard was he was doing side work, under a pseudonym, staying under the radar. He tried to save his career with a 'my side' article, and it only dug his hole deeper.

lol he came off like such a self important prick in that article.
If he can't be used I'd just hand it off to his brother and SIL Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Once they found their footing about midway through season 1 they did a pretty solid job w/Agents of SHIELD and now they would no longer have to deal w/being an appendage of a film universe that treats them like a red headed step child.
Would not be shocked if Joss got to be involved though. If a complete POS like Max Landis is now getting a second chance I could see him getting one as well.

whedon apparently can be (or has been) a pretty severe dickhead although i've never seen or read any of the firefly actors say anything negative. since it would be shocking if this "development" is anything other than a homemade affair, i'm sure that if there is new narrative content, whedon will be involved.
as it is, i'm not holding out hope that this is anything other than a reunion event and hoping its not a stupid commercial (if it is, there will be backlash undoubtedly).

I know he and Maurissa have done a lot of stuff, good stuff, much of it right along side of Joss.
But time and time again, I kept hearing how Firefly was Joss's baby. More than anything. They helped him bring it to life, but what about giving it soul? A heart beat? That driving force.
For all the talented writers and folks around Firefly, I've never heard any other names, like Marti Noxen, Jane Espensen, (maybe Tim Minear?) who could try to pull this off other than Joss.

The early dialog in Buffy and Angel can be stilted and corny, by the end it was sharp and effortless
When he made Firefly, he was firing on all cylinders. He said time and again that Firefly was his passion project.
Firefly without Joss is probably Community season 4
Look at Community when they fired Harmon during s4, then had to scramble to get him back for s5 on bended knee.
Because nobody understood what Community was, except for Dan.
Moses and Dave made the worst season of Community to date, even with many of Dan's writers and producers.
