The differences between Angel, Buffy and Firefly are that most of the actors in Firefly were older, experienced and knew WTF they were doing. Joss's patience for incompetence is only offset by hot, needy and easy actresses. Which were plenty in Buffy, less so in Angel, and non existent in Firefly.

Yes, Jewel and Summer were 'young', but far from the hot mess that Charisma Carpenter and some others were on the other shows.

Nathan said that for this project, Joss gave his blessing to the crew. May not mean a hill of beans, but he sure as hell wasn't going to do the same for the cast of Buffy.

And as for the crew of Serenity, at least as far as working together, they're 100% on board, as it were. Buffy, for example, had multiple drama queens and kings, who sucked the life out of that show, behind the scenes.

Many are making comparisons to the Buffy reboot and Firefly projects making big announcements on the same weekend. With in hours of each other. Yes, both are Joss centric, but they are not the same shows.

I will remain cautiously optimistic,.

Sounds like (though isn’t mentioned) Fillion will be a producer or even an executive producer of the show.

He loves it and should make it right - and he has Firefly-centric show-runners.

Cool stuff.

Smallville was gonna do the same thing a year or so ago but I think Gunn put a pause on it while in full Superman swing. May be time to re-address it - was really looking forward to it at the time.

I wasn't aware Gunn had any say in that matter. Because James Gunn is NOT the one who should be doing anything Superman related.

As for the Firefly fandom, aka Browncoats, Nathan et al can do no wrong. Even if this project fails to launch, or does and flops, it won't diminish the love and admiration fans hold for Firefly or Serenity. Because it'll be an effort out of love, not a cheap money grab that so often is the case. Every one of these actors are doing well enough and have moved on. There's no reason for them to come back and try again, and yet they did.

That speaks volumes to the fandom.

little bit more info
quote:

The revival will move forward without original creator Joss Whedon. Instead, the project will be led by co-showrunners Marc Guggenheim (known for his work on the Arrowverse shows) and his wife, Tara Butters (who previously worked on Gen V). The animated reboot, tentatively titled Firefly: Still Flyin’, has reportedly been in development for the past five years, according to Fillion. It is expected to bring back the core cast in voice roles and continue the story from where the original series left off, effectively bridging the gap between Firefly and Serenity.

The series is being produced by Fillion's production banner Collision33, alongside 20th Century Animation. While specific story details remain under wraps, Fillion has confirmed that a script is already in place, with the first episode titled “Athenia.” Early concept art has also been unveiled, featuring Mal, Zoe, Jayne, Kaylee, and River in their signature looks, hinting that the revival will stay true to the tone and spirit of the original. The project has yet to secure a streaming home, and Fillion and the cast have called on fans to rally behind it to help facilitate the sales process. And judging by Firefly's impressive surge up the charts, it's safe to say fans are hard at work.

So many folk crying 'no Joss, no care!' and I too get that sentiment, but I still have faith in my big damn heroes. Joss of the late 90's - 2010's isn't coming back. He had his run. And for anyone claiming "It'll be WOKE! The actors and show runners are Libruls!" Yeah, and? So was Joss. Severe TDS. As bad as most. Most of Hollywood are that way. Save for Adam Baldwin, for certain not a Lefty, the core of those around Joss were always Left leaning. And yet, they were able to make some of the most based, well thought out plots and characters that still holds up today.

Again, we shall see.

But as for the timeline, I have to wonder how this plays into the short 3 book comic run which came out after the show, but before Serenity.

Basically, the same era. Does animated but on screen stuff NOT from Joss top the Serenity: Better Days comic run which WERE written by Joss? How does that work, exactly?

It's just 3 books. Maybe as a reference point, but I'm skeptical even Joss would allow. But maybe?

whedon also wrote "those left behind" which resolves the hands of blue storyline, introduces the operative, and has book and inara leaving the ship. but since ron glass in dead (and book is a primary character in those comics) i doubt they can use those

right but they'd have to recast a voice actor for book for his character to appear in this new series which is set before the movie.

what is a shame is that had the series not been canceled they were going to film an episode detailing shepherd book's backstory (later done in another comic, the shepherd's tale)

Missed the backstory to Shepherd Book, but as I understand it, comic canon is not screen canon so whatever they said about Book can be rewritten.

a little more info I hadn’t seen, sorry if this is t new

quote:

Sadly, Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Derrial Book in the show and movie, passed away in 2016 at the age of 71. However, his character will be present, with Fillion confirming to Deadline that they are looking to cast a new actor for the part: “Absolutely, that’s the plan. Yeah, we’re bringing back Shepherd Book for certain. Ron Glass, unfortunately, is not available. Ron once joked that he didn’t get a part when they were looking for a Ron Glass-type, and here we are again. We’re looking for a Ron Glass-type, and it’s not going to be Ron Glass.”

Also
quote:

Another interesting part of the animated series is its timeline. This is very much Firefly Season 2, continuing on from where Season 1 left off – and, crucially, set before Serenity. As Tudyk puts it, this is the “Wash Is Still Alive” timeline, with the pilot having been killed during the events of the movie. Fillion expanded upon that decision, and why it was so important to take place prior to the film, telling Deadline: “You can’t bring back Firefly without bringing back all of Firefly. We toyed with the idea of spending some time in the show after the events of Serenity, and I honestly have no interest. I think Serenity was our wonderful farewell to what was an incredible opportunity. Had we only had one more chance to do something, that was it, and it was beautiful. I can’t compete with that. But what I can do is go back in time, bring the gang back together, and give people what they want, which is more Firefly. After Serenity, it’s not the same. I didn’t want to do this without my buddy Alan. And you know that’s a reason why animation is key, because Ron Glass is no longer with us. I like to think, in my heart of hearts, that this is something that he would have wanted.”

I sorta assumed we'd get an AI variation of his voice, but his estate would have to green light that, and now another actor gets a job. So I hope they choose well.

Nathan repeats this own line about himself in the podcast. I'm guessing he's paying homage to Ron, so funny.

9 yrs ago we had an animated FIREFLY teaser from a fan.

This was all we got, but it'll be interesting to see what if anything rings true with the upcoming project.
