It's much better. I'd be very interested in the opinion of people who only saw them both after the fact.

Terminator 2
Aliens

I love Terminator and Alien but I thought the action element resonated with me more than suspense/horror.
These two movies are why I think both John Carter and The Man From Uncle should have had sequels.
*Good movies, fairly modest box office, but people were absolutely interested when they saw the franchise return. Mostly because the first film established a very interesting world or premise that you'd want to explore more.

A lot of the replies are spot on, I'd mention:
Rambo First Blood Pt 2.

First Blood was good, probably even a better movie, but very niche and overlooked. The sequel turned him into an 80's action superhero that everyone knew.

Solid choice but I must go with The Fatties: Fart 2.

I agree with this. SM2 was great .
"Let me give you a hand"
"I'm going to be the better man and WALK away, I said Walk away".

Chris Elliot was so good in that.

And y'all are free to like it. Watch it over and over if you like. Start arguing that it is "better" than the original? That's going to get some pushback from me.

I mean, it’s arguable which is better, but the Tears in the Rain is the best moment in either film and one of the best in cinematic history.

Blade 2

T2 is a good popcorn action movie, but it's dumbed down and has action sequences and cheesy one liners.

But I guess that's why a lot of people like it more.

Agreed - lower budget (obviously) notwithstanding (and I'll even agree that T2 is much more fun and rewatchable), the OG Terminator is a great, great film. I would likely push back against those arguing T2 is "better". They are almost as different as Alien and Aliens are different.

Folks saying Aliens is more fun and rewatchable? Sure. I can sign on to that. Better than Alien? Hogwash.

(ETA: Earlier in the thread I put both of these in the "as good" category for those reasons - fun, rewatchability - and to reaffirm they did not exceed the originals. Alien - like Blade Runner - is a masterpiece almost without peer. Horror movies are rarely in the prestige category and if you had to name one - I think Alien is it. OG Terminator helped usher in the era of action movies as blockbuster instead of b-picture.)

Excellent choice. It ran circles around the first one

Terminator 2 yes, Aliens no. Not that Aliens isn't a good movie, but the original Alien is about as perfect of a sci-fi film as you can get, especially given the time it was made. The sfx were amazing.

Well, that settles it then.

Of course a guy who is in the 2nd but not the 1st thinks the 2nd is better.

I like Next Friday better than Friday.

Sorry, but K has a better arc than Deckard does and is a better character overall.

Eh, he's just a Deckard knock-off. But Deckard wasn't really the point. It was a cool adaptation of a Dick novel with groundbreaking visuals way ahead of its time, groundbreaking music, Harrison Ford at the peak of his magnetism (and I like Gosling, but he's not on that level) and one of the best villains in modern cinema history played by Rutger Hauer at his best. 2049 is a decent sci-fi that would have probably gone straight to streaming if it didn't have "Blade Runner" in the title.

You are aware he made Pan’s Labyrinth, right? It’s probably the single best fantasy movie of all time, and yes even over Lord of the Rings.

Captain America: Winter Soldier

This movie held its own a great spy film, not just a superhero flick.

For as good as Dune was, I think Dune 2 was even better.
