Contact is perhaps my least favorite "sci-fi" movie of all-time, so it's pretty easy.
I mean, the new Independence Day was terrible, but it was better than Contact.

This may be the #1 one listed in the thread so far.
I will say that Contact is pretty underrated though. It gets shite on by most and it just doesn't deserve it IMO. Hell, even South Park got some shots in on it.
I remember people generally hating the ending. But I actually thought the ending was really good and made the most sense. I think people just were pissed they didn't get to "see the aliens." And I understand that (and don't disagree fully). But the cliffhanger it ends on with the 18 hours of static is great.

Man, that's a bad bad movie.

The opening scene is, imo, one of the most important and significant scenes on film.

star wars

interstellar
Dune

alien
aliens
arrival
Blade Runner
Blade Runner 2049
Event Horizon
Martian
Moon
i don't dislike contact. it's just meh. If we're going in the same vane, Arrival is insanely better.

I remember watching Event Horizon about 20+ years ago and liking it. I rewatched it yesterday, and it sucks.

Red Planet.
Carrie Ann Moss getting out of the shower scene alone makes it better than Contact.

It was awful. I can't even remember anything about it, honestly, except that it was bad.
But as bad as that was, I literally got up and left Contact in the theater. I did suffer thru it later, but I just freaking hate that movie.

Interstellar
The Martian
Both are in the same theme as Contact. More grounded in Sci than the Fi.

Man, I love “Contact”. It is one of my favorite 90s movies. It is not even a top 10 all time science-fiction movie. Great movie though and it generated one of my favorite South Park jokes.

I probably know what you mean. Although I'm not positive if you meant the quality and enjoyability of the movie or the purity of it as science fiction is defined as a genre.
Hard Science Fiction means using only accurate depictions of scientific phenomenon and then doing the "what if?" story that naturally follows.
GATTACA and The Martian are really good examples. Most of Contact is too. Especially when you look at the method of first contact that Sagan knew so much about.

Andromeda Strain
Frankenstein (original)
The original The Thing or even the 80’s version.
Sci-Fi doesn’t mean “in space”.

Was coming to post this. I can rewatch that movie over and over.

Maybe The Martian.
But there’s a lot of fiction (albeit well-researched) in Interstellar.

I like Contact. I have been to see the Very Large Array and Arecibo (or what’s left of it) and thought of the movie both times.
I’m also an atheist and science teacher and identify pretty closely with Arroway’s stance on religion.
