Certainly one of the most realistic to our times. Read the book, own the movie, and a long time fan of Carl Sagan's work.

The opening scene is, imo, one of the most important and significant scenes on film. Once you grasp the idea that the further away the perspective from Earth, the older the radio signals, ending with the last sound of the S.O.S. from the Titanic, then silence... truly amazing.

Alright I lose on this one. All the other answers I still personally disagree with.

That's what I was thinking. He didn't even name the best McConaughey movie.

Carl Sagan was a Butt Wipe.

Right after the splashdown of Apollo 8 he invited Frank Borman to speak to the students at Cornell. Borman had decided to leave NASA after Apollo 8 in order to take care of his wife who was having a difficult time with alcoholism.
So Borman gives his talk describing his time as a pilot in the military and his flight to the Moon and back and had his wife seated on stage with him.
At the end of his talk sagan had the students throw marshmallows at Borman and his wife. What an a-hole.

That movie doesn't get nearly the press it deserves.

Some seriously disturbing imagery in that movie. Even by today's standards.

The James Woods character ruins the movie for me. If I see it on, I watch up until he calls the armed guards back in then change the channel.
