Hell or High Water was on SHO today and reminded me of this thread.

Tanner is maybe a little less sympathetic than Toby, being that he's kind of a sociopath, but:

*spoilers since it's pretty recent

He went in knowing they'd get caught and sacrificed himself for his little brother.

If you consider the Soviets the good guys, then Ed Harris' character.

He was just a kid who liked fireworks. How was he supposed to know that toys were actually sentient?

I saw Falling Down during Finals Week my Sr. Year of college. I was being stressed out by a Toxicology course and had to take a break for a couple of hours. It was mid-way through the movie when I realized that I was the only one in the theater laughing at certain parts of the movie. Regardless...I am forever grateful for that movie. It took my mind off of things, if only for a while. I think Michael Douglas' character is the epitome of the sympathetic villain.

Also Roy Batty from Blade Runner, I don't fault him for being what he is.

I would make the argument that Batty is more anti-hero than true villain.

"Antagonist" to Deckard, at least nominally, for sure, but a classic antagonist doesn't normally save the protagonist at the end of the film. Hell, the true antagonist/villain of the film is Tyrell.

His mother is the real villain, she is the one that lets him order fireworks and bully his sisters. Kids need boundaries

1) He was bred to be a soldier - no choice, genetically engineered

2) His sole and guiding focus was what was best for Krypton - think about it, Jor'el had stolen the entire genetic code for future generations of Kryptonians and sent it light years away.

Not only was Magneto sympathetic, but I actually found myself siding with him more often than not.
