Yea it could have been a fun movie. A buzz lightyear prequel in theory sounds good. But way before it's release and leading up there was just no excitement. Even if you're someone that doesn't care at all if something is woke or not, the previews just didn't look like a good movie. I don't know if I heard a single person over the past few months say "Lightyear looks like it's going to be really good." Or even say they wanted to see it. I say all that just to say that I'm not surprised at all this flopped and at no point thought this was going to do well at the box office.

Not sure how you can make a Buzz Lightyear movie that isn’t good, but you did it Pixar

Stop plowing the same tired arse ground. 3 TS movies was probably enough.

That argument would make sense if this was Toy Story 5.

This movie’s concept had potential

I don’t really care about the kiss or Tim Allen.

At the beginning of the movie, the words on the screen indicated that Andy wanted Buzz Lightyear because he saw a movie…and “Lightyear” is that movie.

And there’s no way in 1995 there would have been a lesbian couple with kids in a kids movie in 1995.

Outside of that, the movie was fine. It wasn’t in the same realm as Toy Story, but it was fine. The theater we saw it in on Friday evening was completely full.

Not everyone makes entertainment decisions based on whether they might see two gay people kiss for half a second.

And yet, no one will acknowledge the pattern...

I didnt think about it but yes Buzz is 100% the only white person in the entire movie.

This isn’t true. But I guess it makes for cool message board material.

It was way more “diverse” than it needed to be or would have been for an early ‘90’s movie. But some of you are acting like there were only white people in Disney movies before now.

Was having Frozone in the Incredibles an example of being woke?

Was having Ramone in Cars an example of being woke?

Some people just want to be miserable. The movie was fine - it was clearly not Pixar’s best effort. But if you go in expecting it to be shitty I think that’s what you will end up finding.

Studios are literally making decisions based on exactly this when they're putting together productions. That you don't care they are is why they continue to worry about this far more than putting out exceptional product. Why would they have to, if the only requirement is that it's "fine" and you're ok with whatever activism they shoehorn into it?

Keep in mind, we're talking PIXAR here...a studio that literally couldn't miss 10 years ago. Nearly every movie they produced was an instant classic that touched everyone that saw it. Now...it's "fine."

I didn't even know about all the wonderful Diversity & Inclusion, I just thought the commercials were awful and looked like crap. The word "Lightyear" at the end is the only clue that they were advertising a Buzz Lightyear movie.

When I say I don’t care, I am referring to not making decisions about what could possibly be entertaining to me and my kids based on anything other than the potential entertainment value of that thing.

I don’t pretend to know what Tom Cruise’s politics are (but I’ve seen Maverick twice), or what Chris Evans said in the press about guns (but I enjoy Capt America movies), nor do I care whether or not gay people exist and that (gasp) my kids might see a gay person.

So when I say I don’t care, I’m referring to that - I base my decisions on whether or not I think I’ll enjoy it.

I do agree that Pixar movies have been “off” lately but I don’t think it’s because of politics or being woke. The stories are just not very good. Ever since TS4 in 2019, it’s been a pretty lame set of movies: Onward, Luca, Soul, Turning Red, and now Lightyear.

I never quite understood the concept or market for this movie. Shoehorning “the current things” doesn’t help.

I get it. That's obviously your choice and I behaved that way for most of my life. Until studios and individuals made it so blatantly obvious that they felt their place was pushing political activism and my place was handing them money and shutting up. It's where this idea that refusing to go to a movie because they've made their politics so open is gauche and boorish and only done by the low brow. One hell of a system that sets up for the entertainment industry. I'm not going to be told I have to leave my politics at the door (something I'd always done btw) while ignoring they refuse to do the same. Sorry, no.

Like I said, I get it. For those that agree with their blatant politics it makes perfect sense to support it. If you literally don't care, then fine too. I'm more talking to those that make it clear they hate the activism AND STILL won't stop spending money with these people despite the fact that they are openly telling you they hate you. Those are the people that need to get a grip on their addiction.

Basic nostalgia bait. If you take a look at the slate of new product being crapped out by The Mouse over the next few years, it's almost all Marvel stuff, Star Wars stuff, sequels and reboots.

What's with the Black Panther sequel? Is this going to be Weekend at Bernie's 3?

I think you are the only person not at Disney who thought this movie was a good idea. Who the hell wanted Buzz Lightyears backstory? And then not even having him voiced by Tim Allen.

The Toy Story movies were not popular because Buzz was a spaceman, it was because he was a TOY a child's plaything.
