I gotta say . . .

What a masterpiece. It simply does not get any better from a storytelling concept - from beginning to end. The amount of love and dedication to this (combined in the 3 parts) film is just incredible. The battle scenes in the last two are still breathtaking today - and on the whole, the films hold up amazingly.

I even shed a tear as Frodo, Bilbo, and Gandalf leave Middle Earth. What a journey.

Agreed. There are a bit many decent trilogies but this can't be beat.

I could probably watch at least ROTK on a nearly endless loop. On a plane, and there is no Gal Godot available (WW, etc.)? LOTR/ROTK will be queued.

The attention to detail put into this trilogy is legendary.

Seriously. The Appendix/BTS discs are damn near as fascinating as the movies themselves.

Extended versions are alot, timewise. But they are well worth it.

The mouth of Sauron and Saruman’s fate are valuable additions to the extended editions

Though Peter Jackson wrote Saruman’s death to tie that plot line neatly, when in the books Saruman actually takes over The Shire and causes havoc

I dread the day when some idiot tries to remake these movies. It’s coming soon I’m sure

It's 100% going to happen. A new LotR for a modern audience.

Best trilogy of all time IMO.

When RotK came out my cousins and I did the thing at Tinseltown in BR where they played the first two extended cuts and then the theatrical RotK in one day. It was fricking awesome.

Perfect amount of practical effects with a touch of digital to bring it to life.

And you’re right. It’s so obvious everyone was giving it their all to be as faithful to the source as possible.

No subverting expectations there or “modernizing”.

I did this as well. It was around 12 hours at the theater but a really cool experience.

Every winter, when there's a nasty, cold, rainy weekend in the forecast, I'll get up and brew a pot of coffee, settle in and watch all three extended editions straight through. IT's about 9 hours of content and it's glorious from start to finish.

Also, who the frick downvotes the OP?!?!?!?!?

I'm doing a re-watch as well. Didn't they add a female character to make a love story? Or was that the hobbit movies?

This thread made me laugh because I am literally doing a rewatch right now as well (extended versions like you). Currently half way through Return of the King.

I remember not liking it when I watched it as a kid, but the couple times I saw it as an adult, I'm the exact opposite.

It is a fricking masterpiece. Very well directed, great cinematography, great adaptation from book to movie, and great characters. I've never seen a movie with so many characters I like, especially Gandalf and Sam. Two great dudes and as good a friend as you can imagine.

Gollum is a good villain even though he was an a-hole.

Despite the movies actually being long, it didn't really feel long at all considering how much I liked it. Can't really explain why I like it more as an adult than child, but that's the case with me.

My only two beefs...
First is changing Aragorn's story. In the books, he isn't reluctant to become king. It is his life's goal. It is the key to winning Arwen's hand.

When the Fellowship is preparing to leave Imladris...
"Aragorn sat with his head bowed to his knees; Only Elrond knew what this hour meant to him."

That line always gave me chill bumps. It is the heart of Aragorn's character.

Second, is the age of the hobbits. Frodo is supposed to be the equivalent to 30s, while the younger ones are basically older teens. That type of friendship between younger men and mentors was once common.
