Then watch Star Wars (no bloody Episode IV, no bloody "New Hope", just Star Wars). Then watch The Empire Strikes Back. THEN watch Return of the Jedi.
Then never worry about anything labeled or branded "Star Wars" ever again.
This is probably the best answer. I've come to believe everything else is a complete waste of time.
Rogue One was okay until the end turned into the Fast and the Furious.
Plus, the Empire is no longer menancing after the original trilogy....it turns into something that can't beat anybody or hit the broadside of a barn with their Stormtroopers.
How the frick did they ever come to control the Universe if they're so inept?

OP, you're probably noticing a trend here
Don't make the mistake of confusing Star Wars with the Marvel movies. This wasn't some preconceived, well thought out storyline that rides over a dozen movies, like Marvel has done.
Star Wars is, first and foremost, Star Wars (what has since been butchered into Ep 4 A New Hope). That was filmed as a standalone, a single moment in time. It was done marvelously well, and allowed for Lucas to adapt/extend it through the original trilogy. You'll find twists you really didn't expect, because, well, they weren't there until they were forced into it.
But they kept the same heroes and villains, fleshed them out some, and crafted a satisfying arc that comes to a definitive ending.
This story was so popular and enduring, and Lucas had the money and backing of the studios, that almost 20 years later, they made more movies- the prequels. This fills in the backstory, but at a much different level and mostly about politics and supporting characters, not of the heroes you loved throughout the originals.
Some love this for the world-building, and it does do a decent job of that. But as far as standalone, nah... if you weren't into Star Wars, you're not going to be impressed by the sequels.
The sequels seem hell-bent on undoing the definitive ending of the original story, and throwing mud at several of the heroes' legacies. I guess you might say "reality is less then legend" etc, but Star Wars was never meant (in my mind) to be reality. At this point I'm pretty much done with the sequels, as they are neither exciting or inspiring on their own, and the further we get into them, the more they insult our memories of our heroes. Watch them at your own peril, with this warning in hand.

TBH, replace Christensen with another actor and it might be a great movie.
I may be in the minority, but I thought Christensen was right for the part. I think the dialogue he was given was extraordinarily shitty.
Lucas was being squeezed from all directions in the prequels. The studio execs were probably breathing down his neck and on top of that if you watch behind the scenes stuff, absolutely no one challenged Lucas on anything at all. He was like a God to them.
Lucas had and probably still has GREAT ideas, but his ideas needed a good filter.
Disney has NO idea people. Disney thinks they can just rehash things we've already seen and we'll all eat it up because its stamped with "Star Wars ".

It's hard to tell. Yes, he looked very wooden, but I don't know how he possibly could have pulled off some of that dialogue naturally.
I always thought he was a little pretty for the role, but again, it's really hard to hold him responsible with the dialogue and plotting. After Attack of the Clones, I skipped Revenge of the Sith in theaters. That's how turned off I was.

Watch A New Hope, Empire, and Return of the Jedi.
Then watch A New Hope and Empire again and again.
Then have your spirit crushed by the prequels but learn to enjoy some of the moments pretty much all Ewan McGregor related. "Hello there" , for instance.
Then have your spirit revived by Rogue One.
Then watch Clone Wars animated series and fall in love with Star wars like a little kid all over again.
Then have your soul ripped out your a-hole and your heart incinerated in hell fire by the sequels.
Then watch the original trilogy again every couple of months for the rest of your life and throw Rogue One in there sometimes.
That's what I've done anyway.

I hadn't heard of the machete order until now but I think it looks interesting. I wish I had a friend who hadn't seen any SW to try it out on.

The first season isn’t all that great. But the seasons after that are pretty good.

If you have the time and patience, watch them in order, with Rogue one before A New Hope, finish with The Force Awakens. Let the Last Jedi rot in its own feces.
If you don't want to invest that amount of time, watch the Original Trilogy and be done with it.

I'd watch them in *almost* the order released.

4. Phantom Menace (Ep. I)
5. Attack of the Clones (Ep. II)
6. Revenge of the Sith (Ep. III)
7. Rogue One
8. The Force Awakens (Ep. VII)
9. Solo
10. Nvm, you're good
1. A New Hope (Ep. IV)
2. Empire Strikes Back (Ep. V)
3. Return of the Jedi (Ep. VI)

6. Revenge of the Sith (Ep. III)
7. Rogue One

Okay ... I've watched IV, V, VI, I, and about half of II I the past 24 hours.
Observations so far:
Hardly anyone aims a weapon in these movies, but those Stormtroopers can't shoot for shite.
Carrie Fisher looked good in the Jabba the Hutt slave girl metal bikini, but Kristen Bell wore it better in Fanboys.
I can't understand about half of what Jar Jar Binks is saying.
Darth Maul is a scary bastard.
Annikan is an a-hole in Episode II and 6 year old Jake Lloyd was a better actor than this dolt. If Natalie Portman fricks him I'm going to be pissed.
Natalie Portman was 16 (I think) when they filmed Episode I. She was already a very pretty girl. I don't know how many years later Episode II was filmed - 3 maybe? - but she's a knockout in it. Of course she's picking 50 and still gorgeous.
That's all I've got so far.
