exactly. i dont see why the apologists get so up in arms. after the disastrous prequels, they wanted to play it as safe as possible

Yeah, you're right.
Cause an outline of basic plot points = copy. I bet you think District 9 and Avatar are the same fricking movie.

So you're saying we're not supposed to feel any emotional connection to the main characters in film?

I think you're confusing "ordinary" with "boring."

Meh, the third act of TFA is way more Jedi than it is ANH.

The Last Jedi will be the tell but I think they tried to recapture the entire original trilogy in Force Awakens so that they could move forward in the next film.

that scene sucked

I completely agree. I do admit it was kinda cool seeing vader do that shite. But it was completely pointless, and unnecessary to the story. And it's placement after the climax just made the entire ending feel disjointed. It was just stupid.

But all I hear about it "OMFG did you see that DAWTH Vader scene?!?!?!?! SO frickING AMAZEBALZ!!"

hell, most of the reasons why Roge One ultimately failed were having to tie itself to the main storyline

I do have to disagree with you there. I think the most of the reason Rogue One fails comes down to the characters just being super fricking underdeveloped, and uninteresting (Specifically Jyn).

But all of the tie-ins and references were super annoying to me. You didn't need Tarkin. You didn't need Vader. You didn't need "wanted-man testicle nose." You didn't need "OH hey there's 3po and R2 for a split second! I fricking know those guys!"

I definitely agree that the interesting parts are the ones outside of the skywalker family. There's a lot they can explore in that galaxy. And the whole idea of having it be a heist/war film was a good idea. But I felt like it just got lost along the way.

You forgot the bar scene, that was original in TFA. ANH didn't have a bar scene with exotic aliens.....
Wait, didn't ANH have a bar scene?

I forgot that TFA had the Empire searching for a Droid that was holding information that the Empire needed. Did they do that in ANH?

Not enough up votes for your post. I liked TFA, it was nice to get back to a well done Star Wars movie, but TFA seemed way more than just an homage to ANH.

It was a good but very forgettable movie that would've grossed 200mil and already been forgotten about had it not had the words "star wars" attached to it.

More people quote lines from phantom menace(albeit sarcastically) than anything spoken in the tfa

Plus it makes no sense with how Vader acts in ANH

Speaking of nitpicking, does anyone else feel like lightsabers were unnecessarily retconned to be less powerful? I have a distinct memory of Padme's attempted assassination in the novel tie-in to Attack of the Clones where Anakin is thinking about how delicate the lightsaber is, how he has to be more than inch perfect in slicing those poisonous bugs or he'll risk killing Padme, etc. We see countless lightsaber wielders in the prequels and the original trilogy cut through limbs like butter. But Kylo Ren whacks Fin across the back and he's not cut in half? Rey slices Kylo Ren in the face and it doesn't take off half of his head? You can make the argument that Kylo Ren did indeed make sure to just graze the surface of Fin's back before reaching for Anakin's old lightsaber to finish the job, but that a) is a bit weak and b) doesn't explain how or why Rey would do the same to Kylo Ren.

I thought they should have changed the fight choreography a bit. Kylo Ren was slicing up trees as he was on the attack against Fin, they could have been involved in knocking him out. And Abrams already decided that the ground was going to split at juuuuust the right moment during the Rey and Kylo Ren fight, so why not just have Kylo Ren stumble backwards after Rey's little stabs and have the ground split then?

To be honest, I think the best summation of the quality of Lens Flares: Episode VII is that it had standard Hollywood blockbuster film issues. But it didn't have Star Wars issues.

And just because, my unsolicited and unpopular opinion of Star Wars films ranked from best to worst: Empire, Hope, Rogue One (the good far outweighs the bad), TFA, Revenge, Return, Phantom, Attack. I honestly turn off Attack of the Clones more often than I do Phantom Menace. And I enjoy the pod racing.

A person who has never touched a lightsaber gets in a duel with a Sith Lord after thirty minutes of training and wins. They also bungled the Sith Lord. Start the movie with slaughtering people and stopping a laser beam in mid air. Finish it with him being a talkative whiny melodramatic bitch even worse than Anakin in number 2. That movie sucked arse.

Rogue One failed?

I think a lot of you have this standard that Star Wars (and in a similar way, comic book movies) should be on par with movies that contend for Best Picture awards.

They're popcorn movies with lots of bang-bangs and pew-pews that don't require a lot of thought. If you go in with that mindset, they're a lot more enjoyable.
