If you've never seen the original Star Wars movie (IV, A New Hope), TFA by itself is a great movie. If you've seen the original, TFA is a blatant ripoff. All I could think throughout the entire movie was, "Why would they do this?" A reboot would have been fine if the original was unknown to the current generation, but virtually everyone who saw TFA has seen the others.
At the theater, I wasn't cazy about Rogue One. A few days ago I watched it again and really enjoyed it. Then I had to watch episode IV right after.

Why they did this is everyone lost faith in Star Wars and they needed to start it off with a soft reboot to get the fan’s trust again. It is a very carefully crafted film that was executed almost flawlessly on what they intended to do.

Honestly, I don’t care to see
TFA again. It’s on TV all the time now.
It just doesn’t do anything for me.
It’s not bad per se, I was just so disappointed.
I thought that the last act of Rogue One was insane. I was like Holy frick.

I guess I just never viewed it that way because I enjoyed all of the previous Star Wars films, prequels included. But being aware of reactions based on this board's views, your explanation is reasonable. I still don't see why they couldn't just come up with an original story. New fans would see it anyway, and older people wouldn't have been pissed by the ripoff aspect. Regardless, any Star Wars movie will always be on my short list of movies that MUST be seen at the theater on the big screen.

TFA is better than ANH.

It's the beginning of a trilogy that has 2 movies left to go.
We don't even know what the story is yet much less if it's original or not.

I’ll be honest, I absolutely loved both movies while watching them in the theater but having a couple of years between then and now I would choose Rogue One as the movie I enjoy more.
It was a different angle on the universe and the galactic struggle. It was a boots on the ground type movie and that really hadn’t been done since Hoth in Empire.
The ground battle with the Ewoks in ROTJ is close but it includes Luke and his struggles to turn his father and face the emperor.
Rogue One really seemed to me to be people sacrificing themselves in a desperate attempt against overwhelming odds to help an upstart rebellion. They knew they weren’t coming back and that’s why they seem to be characters I feel for at the end when they die.
And let’s not forget the main complaint about Rogue One was the lack of character development.
I want you all to forget the last 40 years of Star Wars and watch A New Hope and show me the character development we have in that movie. Really, who gave a shite when Obi Wan “died”? Han was a complete a-hole. And Luke, well despite him being our “Everyman” he was a whinny brat and that’s it.

Yeah, this as well. It seems that with this trilogy that they're going more the Lord of the Rings route where it can honestly be said to be a single film. It will take off from the second the last one left us unlike the other Star Wars film. Rogue One I think you can fairly critique in it's current form since it's a lone piece, but you can't with TFA. I thought it was a great start, but it's up to its sequels to hold it up.

I cared when obi Wan died. He was the only one who knew wtf was going on.

It wasn't a bad movie, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't important to the Star Wars Universe and non of the characters were even memorable.
The point of the movie was to show people the battle that led to stealing the death star plans that had been in the opening crawl of A New Hope since 1977. I'd argue Galen Erso is a very important character in the universe.

You're right that they needed to get fans trust back, but they did it in the safest, laziest way possible. I liked TFA, but it's hard not to notice the story structure is almost identical to A New Hope.

The Story structure at its core components is almost identical to the entire genre of good vs bad scifi fantasy story telling. What's your point? Did you watch the video in the OP? Go back and watch it.

TFA is fine. Rogue One is hot garbage.
Rogue One is the third best Star Wars movie ever made.

TFA good
Rogue One bad
Rogue One bad

with a statement like that, probably not
seriously, people have to stop making this generalization, it comes off as extremely weak and uninformed
Also on the first page:

There was no backlash remotely like the prequels for TFA. Seems like clickbait to me.
by troll'r'us - pretty sure this 5 page discussion proves you even more wrong than ever... go figure, you wrong, I guess you should be used to it by now though?

I'm not spending 24 minutes on a video of someone telling me it's ok to like a movie.
Posted on 12/1/17 at 10:03 am to RedPants
why not? you spend hours on a message board trying to convince us it's not ok.

Then you're no longer worth addressing taking pride on your ignorance.

Whew! I was really hoping it would be okay.
