It’s a shame people have forgotten the 2005 King Kong movie

I never see this movie mentioned anymore.

Just rewatched it for the first time in a very long time and it’s absolutely fantastic.

The King Kong vs TRex fight is one of the most thrilling fight scenes ever. Absolutely pumps you up.

The movie still looks great.

Naomi Watts is hot.

The bug scene is still nightmare inducing.

The story is extremely tragic.

It is too long and could have cut out some of the comedic beats, sure. But it’s an ambitious movie and deserves its props

I remember when it came out. Was super excited to see it at the movies.

I enjoyed it but I do seem to recall that it was a little long.

It is. And there’s stuff to cut, but I’d also be cautious about cutting too much. The first 5 minutes is a montage of New York including of a Hooverville. I don’t know if all of that was needed. Or the lady’s father figure leaving her.

We could have cut all comedy attempts from Jack Black (he’s not funny in this and his jokes seem out of place). We could have cut a lot of the scene with the producers or cut the scene entirely and just had a line or two to sum it up.

It is overly indulgent, but then there’s so many little details I love.

I love the mustache joke for example and I feel like a studio would say cut it and that’s the wrong move.

Yes and it would set the template for the later KK's that were even more so. Best KK since the original (I liked how Jackson copied some elements of the original like the T. Rex fight where Kong plays w/ the dead T. Rex).

I actually love this version but I don’t watch it because I can’t handle the bug scene.

My edit would be the exhausting dinosaur stampede scene. Jackson sometimes stretches chase or action scenes way longer than they need to go… with questionable physics cluttering it up.

But for the most part… I love 2005 Kong.

Just know this is really happening right now in the crawlspaces and inner walls 1000 times a day in your house near where you sleep

Agree. I think I try to blank that scene from memory

I love this movie. The different sequences/settings throughout of the movie is pretty cool.

Also; Jack Black was a nice touch for the role he played.

My only three memories of this film are:
• The terrible CGI in the stampede scene.
• King Kong taking time to play on the ice in New York.
• Jack Black's anachronistic way of speaking.

I haven't bothered to see it a second time.

The 1976 film has plenty of faults, but it has nostalgia for me.

I think that's all I remember about this movie.

But I do remember that it's still way better than all of the ones made since.

I never thought it was great. Saw it in theaters and was kinda bored with it - the long run time didn't help. Jack Black was a weird cast choice and it didn't work IMO.

I view KK as I do Troy, Black Hawk Down, American History X.

Good movies that I just don't really want to see again.

Her juggling routine soothed the savage beast.

And her assets are nice too.

As much as I love the character, Peter Jackson’s take was bloated, and I do not agree that the effects looked great. In some parts, they are downright awful.

I liked getting some backstory at the beginning. Liked that they wanted to throw in the lost spider scene, and other parts.

But…

Jack Black was a huge miscast for me. The WETA team was trying too hard to show what it could do, and it simply fell flat…like in the dino chase scene.

Wasn’t that a Peter Jackson passion project post LOTR?
