Showrunner for first season was Miguel Sapochnik who directed some of GOT's best episodes.
He left after the first season of House of Dragon. Think that affected the show?

The dinner scene with the the Valeryons is where I stopped. It’s just dreadful right now.

Watched S1 and was hopeful. Didn't enjoy S2 nearly as much. Was about to pick up HBO again until reports of how bad S3 was being received.

Anecdote/specilatiom from Gary Bucehler:
They were having trouble advancing the story after S1. The show runner went to Jr Martin and asked for notes to help straighten out the story.
Speculation is, George never gave them the notes in time, so they had to start shooting without them. Therefore, mass dropoff.
None of these shows have ever gone well once Martin's original text is gone.

That's quite a bit different than George R.R. Martins account of events. George says the guy he hired basically quit listening to anything he had to say.

That and basically excommunicating GRRM from the set and ignoring his suggestions.
The showrunner went rogue and it's been complete arse since. The first season had promise and it's a nut-riddled turd at this point.

It's not like GOT where there's an unfinished story that Martin would need to flesh out for them
It's a fully finished novel that could easily be adapted faithfully if someone wanted to
I think the real problem is that as the book progresses, the main characters greatly change, and that's not good for a TV series. GOT had the core group of POV characters that carried the novels, and the TV series. But if they followed the books faithfully, we'd barely have seen 1/2 the main cast this past season, which isn't going to work

They’ve allowed too many women to run these shows and have told GRRM to frick off at each turn.

There has not been a female showrunner on a Game of Thrones show...
And as for the op, the first season of House of the Dragon was bad. So, it sounds like the show has gone from bad to bad.

S1 GRRM was involved. They pushed him out and the show has nose dived.

I despise GRRM but it was an obvious mistake running him off. These writers are just bad. Battle episodes are fine but the dialogue and writing in seasons two and three are really bad.
Also this. Last nights finale when the the woods witch and Aemond were getting it on I was like we really get this ugly fully clothed witch having Aemond by the balls? Game of THrones gave us Melisandre and you can see how those tits could ensnare a wannabe king.
I still say one of the craziest things anybody was able to do in all of Game of THrones was when Melisandre sat on Jon's lap butt naked and Jon turned that down. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit she would have got it.

this season started out well with the first 2 episodes....but I've since lost interest. I'm a few episodes behind now and I don't know that I care to slog through it

My hope is that whoever ends up with HBO doesn't mess with Dunk & Egg too heavily. Season 1 of HOD had some promise and changes from the source that were pretty good but they've squandered all that. They've changed so much of the story I don't think they have any clue how to finish.

I have enjoyed this season in the sense of what a complete cluster it has been. They cannot possibly get this thing to the finish line in the tie they have left unless they even more wildly depart rom the books, and eliminate key events.
