The middlebrow Oscar bait movie - something coming out between Thanksgiving and Christmas directed by Ron Howard/Steven Spielberg, based off of a New York Times bestseller, starring Tom Hanks/Russell Crowe and Julia Roberts/Renee Zellweger.

Isn’t that a Netflix series and not a movie?

Those have morphed into Perks of Being a Wallflower coming of age type movies now.

Well, that was just a preview of things to come. He got there, eventually.

But also because the primary audience for them, HS and college kids, HATE sex in movies
I will be honest if Pornhub existed when Porky's came out I would have been far less interested in seeing it.

One Crazy Summer with John Cusack is a very underrated one.

Some great movies in there, but Porky's 1 ~ 3 ruled them all

Original mid budget movies are completely dead because audiences refuses to watch them in theater. It's not just just comedies its across the board, movie studios don't take chances like that very often anymore.
That's why we get 2 dozen comic book movies a year

I was a big fan of The Girl Next Door. Great young comedy RomCom.

Audiences rarely watched them in theaters. They'd make a modest profit but nothing too crazy. However, where studios made money off of those kinds of films was the home release market. DVD/Blu ray sales were vital for those kinds of movies. Now that physical media is more or less dead and everything is digital, it's very difficult for films like American Pie or Porky's to get made.

Part of the issue is how movie budgets are these days. It feels rare to see movies like this greenlit by major studios, so unless someone makes one as an indie film I just don’t see it.
Sort of like parody comedies. Hopefully Spaceballs 2, if successful, will encourage studios to make more.
