I had never heard the entire story behind the scenes of the showrunner for She-Hulk

And it all makes sense now.

quote:

The head writer and showrunner of “She-Hulk” was Jessica Gao. She was best known for being the credited writer on the “Pickle Rick” episode of “Rick and Morty.”

During the production of that episode, “Rick and Morty” showrunner Dan Harmon cast Susan Sarandon as the family’s therapist, a character Gao had named Dr. Wong in the script. Gao crashed out over the casting of a white actor for this part. In 2018 this was a major transgression and as an act of contrition, Harmon did a podcast with Gao called “Whiting Wongs,” which is 40 hours of him apologizing and learning about racism.

The writer credit on the Pickle Rick episode and this podcast raised Gao’s profile enough for her to land the showrunner gig on Marvel’s Disney+ “She-Hulk” show, but the production was extremely troubled. In addition to not staffing lawyers or legal-drama writers on the show who could deliver on the “Ally McBeal in the MCU” pitch, the “She-Hulk” show required — as described by Gao in interviews — an extraordinary level of direct personal involvement and micromanagement from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.

Gao described her relationship with Feige as supportive and collaborative, but she also describes him routinely intervening to reshape the show in the wake of catastrophic test audiences responses.

In the finale episode, She-Hulk breaks the fourth wall of her show, climbs through the Disney+ UI and confronts a robot named K.E.V.I.N. that has been controlling her life. Feige allowed this, but Gao wanted to put a baseball cap on the robot like the one Feige wears, and that was a bridge too far for him. According to an interview Gao gave The Hollywood Reporter, she threatened to resign if the robot could not wear the hat, and Feige immediately accepted her resignation. A visual designer managed to mediate the dispute by incorporating a “hat-like element” into the robot’s design.

The show was cancelled after the first season, the cast has been released, none of its events have been referenced in any other Marvel productions and “She-Hulk” star Tatiana Maslany is not in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Jessica Gao has no IMDB credits since “She-Hulk” was cancelled in 2022.

I bet that's some riveting entertainment.

Thankfully Maslany has bounced back from that bomb, she is a great actress. Could have been a career ender.

This is hardly surprising.

They fricked up Daredevil, they fricked up The Hulk, and the show's writing was just bad.

Deadpool gave you the template for a 4th wall breaking character and they screwed it up; it didn't help that they clearly were unwilling to put the money and time into making the effects look good.

Tatiana Maslany is a good actress, but I have no idea how much, of any, the fault lies with her. The show was just a mess from start to finish.

Not to mention screaming at the guy with childhood trauma who lost the woman he loved AND his best friend WHILE saving half the universe (causing his arm to get burnt to a crisp) AND fighting in the final battle to save the planet and the universe AGAIN? Not a good look. So many other ways to make your point without making your heroine look like a shitty person.

Not a surprise that some woke Feminazi was behind this unwatchable trainwreck of a show.

After filming this scene, Ruffalo probably went to his trailer and furiously beat his meat wearing one of those toy Hulk hands.

You see, she's a woman. Therefore, any action she takes must be predicated upon a DEI/woke/feminazi agenda.

It's not possible that this person is just an a-hole.

Wait, so you think this woman who was given reigns to a D+ show whose only credentials, per the article, was writing one episode, complains they cast a white woman's voice for a role, made the show runner do a Podcast called Whiting Wongs, and this had nothing to do with DEI/Wokeness shite? I swear it's the same posters who just refuses to acknowledge that some this is real.

That scene always made me chuckle. She knows how to control her anger better than Bruce simply because she gets cat-called in the street? Yeah...let's focus on Bruce Banner's origins for a minute:

1. Experimented on and abused by his father.
2. Watched his mother get murdered by his father in cold blood.
3. Exposed to a lethal dose of gamma radiation that doesn't kill him, but activates the mutation his father implanted into his DNA, making him an uncontrollable rage monster.
4. Is violently sought after by the U.S. government, with his girlfriend's father leading the charge, hoping to poke and prod him for the rest of his natural life.
5. Is lured into a violent confrontation with his own father who wants to kill him for his power.

Yeah...she understands how to control her anger infinitely better than Bruce does.

Interesting because over the last several weeks I was told, "It's fiction. Race swapping doesn't matter."
