interview with showrunner
“We ran out of money”
quote:
One of the challenges of making television at any scale [is] nobody has infinite time and resources,” he said. “When you’re as a showrunner, you’re always in the position of having to balance storytelling and the resources that you have available to tell that story. One of the things that came into play in season two is: What is the final destination of the series and where are we going? It was a combination of factors that led us to rebalance the season knowing now where we’re going. We wanted to rebalance the story in such a way that we had three great seasons of television [after season one] to round out and tell this story. When you’re trying to mount the show, which requires a tremendous amount of resources, construction, armor, costumes, visual effects … we are trying to give The Gullet — which is arguably the second most anticipated action event of Fire & Blood — trying to give it the time and the space that it deserves.”

Word salad holy Moses. Add in extraneous scenes like Daemon at harrenhal and that explanation makes no sense.

The showrunner also confirmed this series would go 4 seasons. Considering everything yet to come in this story, it wouldn't shock me one bit to have some of the important battles skipped with only an aftermath shown or shown as flashbacks or some such shite

To me if they knew they were gonna be short on time given they were only going to have 8 episodes then why spend so much god damn screen time in Harrenhal? None of that is mentioned in the books, Daemon just goes there and pulls together an army so it wasn't necessary. They could have gotten the same point across in a quarter of the screen time and then used the additional space to move the story along in other areas.
If you made them take truth serum, it's probably because those scenes are cheaper

Money is absolutely the problem. Have you seen some of these SFX and green screens that look like they filmed it in a Blippi studio?

Can someone explain to me why CGI is so expensive?
To me it seems like the cost of cgi should be less than that of traditional sets and special effects.
For CGI your costs I’d assume to be the pay for the programmers, the cost of the software, and the cost of the actual green screen.
For a traditional set you have material costs and construction costs and I’d imagine you’d need more construction workers than software engineers.
What am I missing?

Whoever “leaked” this “finale” must feel dumb now.

It makes perfect sense when you read between the lines and replace the words “time” and “resources” with “money.”
When they say this…
quote:
we are trying to give The Gullet — which is arguably the second most anticipated action event of Fire & Blood — trying to give it the time and the space that it deserves.
..it actually means this:
quote:
We didn’t have enough money to do The Gullet the way we wanted to do it in season 2. Rather than halfass it to squeeze it into the budget Discovery gave us for season 2, we decided the lesser evil was to push it to season 3 and pray they give us more money after seeing the light. Otherwise, at least we can do this battle right (even if the rest of S3 has to be gutted to fit it into the budget).
I’m adding a little bit of speculation but the overall message is 100% in-line with that quote. When they say “the time and space it deserves” they aren’t referring to literal screen time constraints. They are referring to the cost constraints of major battle scenes. The cost to shoot Daemon’s entire time in Harrenhal might be less than a few minutes of epic warfare.
I’d be very curious to know how the cost for HOTD S3 compared to the cost for later seasons of GOT.

I think you have it right, if you’re comparing CGI dragon warfare to pure practical effects with animatronic dragons, on location with real castles/forts, with pyrotechnics and everything.
But that’s very rarely the actual comparison. The real comparison being made in this case is between huge battle scenes with a ton of VFX (whether practical, CGI, or a mix) vs. more subdued scenes with way less VFX.
ETA: To put it another way - if Top Gun 2 had been 100% CGI it would have been a way less expensive production. But it still would have been way more expensive than, say, a courtroom drama.

I’m very surprised some of these companies with unlimited budgets (Amazon, apple) haven’t tried to take the IP away from HBO. If I was them I would make HBO an offer they couldn’t refuse and bring over the showrunners (excluding the writers from season 2) . profit

Any other ideas on who captured Otto? I assumed initially that it was done by Larys, but I'm not so sure the more I think about it. I don't remember that being something that happened in F&B.

Me theory. In the books, the Lannister who they focused on in the finale ends up in the dungeon for a long time, tortured, disfigured, but he lives.
He goes on to serve as hand to the winners and serves the realm, seemingly forgetting the fight they just had and who was on what side.
Otto is much more interesting in this series, so instead of just having Rhaenera’s side kill him when they get him, I bet he’s going to fill that role.
They can just kill off that Lannister in the Gullet, which makes sense since they have him on the boat.

And that they aren’t starting production of season 3 until 2025, seemingly when Dunk and Egg should be nearing the end of post-production. There is no overlap with directors and as far as I can tell, Condel (HOTD showrunner) is only one of the executive producers for D&E. I assume budgetary reasons are the main reason they aren’t producing these shows concurrently. But if we are only getting 1 ASOIAF show a year, these 7 additional shows in development sound much less appealing.

Loved the finale but wish it was more action
So what does Alicent think Aemond and Cole are going to do when she gives up the throne?

I think she's setting rhynears(sp?) up.
no way she throws her stupid kids under the bus after letting them be donkeys for so long.

I guess that is possible, but they've set her up all season to realize that her only kids that aren't pieces of shite are a son she didn't raise and a daughter that has a few screws loose. She's trying to save the one innocent kid that she can.
Also, she didn't realize Larys was escaping with Aegon when she went to Dragonstone.

I couldn’t care less about the Sea Snake. I like Corlys and the actor that plays him but his character doesn’t warrant a show of its own
Once they decided to make Velaryons black, they had no choice but to give them ample screen time.
