Just one day after Netflix secured the streaming rights to Seinfeld in a deal reportedly worth more than $500 million, WarnerMedia’s HBO Max has gone one step further, acquiring the rights to The Big Bang Theory in a deal reportedly worth more than $1 billion.

The deal gives WarnerMedia’s HBO Max the exclusive domestic streaming rights for five years, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That means another streaming service could carry the show in global markets. The deal also extends the syndication deal between Warner Bros. Television and TBS through 2028.

Studios have already been spending tons of money to make the next Game of Thrones with all of the scifi/fantasy drama's in the works. Are we about to see similar levels of investment in creating the next iconic sitcom? Can a binge release format produce an iconic sitcom, or is a weekly discussion over multiple months required for a sitcom to become iconic?

It seems like the hit rate for TV sitcoms are a lot lower than it is for the big budget dramas though. For every Big Bang Theory or Friends, there's dozens of sitcoms that end up failing miserably and only lasting a season or two.

If AT&T owns a studio by proxy and sells products to that company, is this like money laundering or at the very least tax avoidance?

At very east It does seem like ATT knows how to negotiate with itself.

I could see Netflix or Hulu doing this. But why HBO?

Because its not just HBO, that is what Warner Media's new streaming service is called, HBO Max. For a few dollars more than what you are paying for just HBO you will get HBO content, warner bros and CW content, BBC content..and i guess other things they buy like BBT

I don't quite get all the hate for it on here, it was overall a pretty funny show. Had some odd moments, but every show does.

For me a sitcom is something for me to watch and turn my brain off and enjoy.

How in the world would this show make them well over a billion in a 5 year period? Does not compute.

It won't. Netflix spent 16 Billion on content last year. They didn't make that back. But it helped build subscribers. None of these guys are in it for the short haul.

Unless you want to continually rewatch old HBO series then HBO content isn't all that great. I have HBO go and I find myself choosing a movie from Netflix or Prime over any HBO option.

It's lame and the jokes aren't funny. They're lazy, which can work with a good cast and story. It had neither.
