Horror-comedy is a subgenre of horror.
Evil Dead 2
Shaun of the Dead
Cabin in the Woods
Tucker and Dale
etc.
Similar to thriller and horror, the lines start to get blurred with some dark comedies though (like American Psycho, the Menu, etc.)
At last we find common ground.
My favorite sub-genre under the larger umbrella. Cabin in the Woods and American Psycho are absolutely brilliant.

Cabin in the Woods(if you consider it horror)
And this becomes the problem… it sends up so many horror tropes that it wraps back around into black comedy rather than being straight horror.
Great film but kind of horror-adjacent rather than horror.
Cabin in the Woods is JW's love/hate letter to the genre itself, which is why there are all of the tropes and in-jest moments. However, it does also work really well as a stand-alone horror film in its own right. It's actually pretty fricking brilliant and easily one of my favorites of the last 15 years.

Nice deep pull from the archives.
Quality pic.
The best thing about Session 9 is that it's where this heavily-used gif comes from:

High Tension
I believe it's a French film but it's on Amazon.
I enjoyed it...up until the twist. That ruined the entire movie for me.

Ha! I forgot about that thread, and the review I posted therein. Going back and reading my thoughts immediately after seeing it the first time, I find that I like it even more after a second viewing and some time to stew on it. Skinamarink is an experience that you just won't find anywhere else except during your own dreams, and like a dream, it can be slow and pointless, it can be weird and unsettling, and it can be scary as shite (at least the first time you watch it). Also like a bad dream, it is only really going to work if you watch it alone in the middle of the night with all the lights off.

I sincerely could not believe how great Smile 2 was. I did not see that coming but it had me so unsettled

yes she is. and she should have garnered an academy nom for her performance. She was simply incredible in that role. Loved Smile 2, my favorite horror movie of the year by far.

"When Evil Lurks" and "The Oddity" are 2 recent ones that come to mind.

I do love a good horror movie.
So many mainstream and indie movies to choose from.
Mainstream, like many others have mentioned, The Ring was phenomenal when it came out on the big screen. Granted I was in highschool, but it was one of the few horror movies that creeped me out.
Another one was the Mothman Prophecies, due to it's historical nature. Side note, my grandparents drove over Silver Bridge 2 hours before it collapsed.
The Descent was another original horror movie that became an instant classic.
Found footage movies, OG Paranormal Activity scared the shite out of me. Just the thought of that stuff gives me the chills.
I loved the Wailing, and many other Korean horror movies.
Indie movies like Creep, Southbound, Last Shift, The Void, Hellhouse.
And one that I haven't seen mentioned SUSPIRIA. What a freaking movie that was.
Come True was a sneaky good movie if you haven't seen it.
Martyrs
Barbarian, my friends didn't like it, but I don't think they are big horror fans. I thought it was entertaining.
I've seen a lot.
Eye's of My Mother was one of the more messed up ones, if you are intrigued give it a watch.

The crazy part is how much more hype and respect the horror genre has received in that 6.5 years, but what I consider premium content is severely lacking.
Horror is a very tough genre to quantify. There’s just so many different types and so subjective. For example I get creeped out by things centered on old formerly opulent now decaying places and such.

The Ring. Second place Let the Right One In.

It was so well done. And just the constant dread, and all the characters making bad decisions, but not in a corny slasher movie-esque way. In a real human way.
I watched it on an international flight. I bet the people behind me thought I was a psycho.
