Young Vito is the reason I give Pt 2 the slight edge over 1.

Last scene of 2. Shows the irony of the movie

Agreed.

the horrible acting of Diane keaton hampers any impact this scene might have
A better actress could have "phoned it in" and did a better job. Almost every line she had was done poorly, like she had just gotten the script and had 5 minutes to prepare for the shoot.
Her acting in that scene was right on par with the gal, Delores Taylor, who played opposite Tom Laughlin in the old "Billy Jack" movies.

That was the complete realization of Michael's journey. So poignant, so good - and so very sad. The Godfather is Michael's journey.

"Then I'll kill 'em both" best scene.

There was this kid I grew up with; he was younger than me. Sorta looked up to me, you know. We did our first work together, worked our way out of the street. Things were good, we made the most of it. During Prohibition, we ran molasses into Canada… made a fortune, your father, too. As much as anyone, I loved him and trusted him. Later on he had an idea to build a city out of a desert stop-over for GI’s on the way to the West Coast. That kid’s name was Moe Greene, and the city he invented was Las Vegas. This was a great man, a man of vision and guts. And there isn’t even a plaque, or a signpost or a statue of him in that town! Someone put a bullet through his eye. No one knows who gave the order. When I heard it, I wasn’t angry; I knew Moe, I knew he was head-strong, talking loud, saying stupid things. So when he turned up dead, I let it go. And I said to myself, this is the business we’ve chosen; I didn’t ask who gave the order, because it had nothing to do with business!

I love the flashback scene at the end of part 2, where it’s their pop’s birthday and Mike is home from college and has just enlisted. All four of the brothers’ (counting Tom) personalities come out. Sonny introduces his sister to Carlo.
This is my favorite.

As a younger man my favorite scene was Vito explaining to Michael how they would come to him to set up a meeting and that whoever came to him was the rat.
But now as an older man my favorite scene is when Vito is playing in the garden with his grandson before he dies. I love that scene. Just an old man enjoying time with his grandson. With everything he had gone thru in his life and everything he had accomplished and all the struggles he had along the way. The peace and joy he must have been feeling in those few minutes watching the innocence and wonder of his small grandson must have put such peace and joy in his heart. That’s how I would want to feel in my last moments in this world.

I know it’s been mentioned but the scene where Vito tracks Fanuchi kills him then walks back through the crowd is my pick for the great scene in movie history

Just watched 2 and the reason is still say 1 is better than 2, even though 2 may actually be better, is strclictly because there is no James Caan and sonny in 2 (also Brando).
The story loses more than half its main characters by the end of 2. Caan just made the film better.

what?
Neri was described as watchful, taciturn, ruthless and unswerving in his loyalty to Michael.

Baptism scene, Michael praising God and renouncing satan while the executions are going on.

That scene is so good. Fredo was the only one on Michael's side as he joined the army.
I also think it was a blessing in disguise that they were unable to get Brando back. It would have been great to see Vito back, but he would have dominated that scene, and I don't know that some of the subtleties would have come out like they did.
