Anyone feel like they learned nothing from that episode?
It was entertaining, but nothing happened.
I think we learned a good bit about Jon snow. This was his breakthrough imo. His girl dying is also a gamechanger.
Seeing as he is part of the NW, and is adept in navigating the winter, he will have a huge role moving forward.

First things first loved the episode. Great directing and just great all around
One question I have is why did the guards keep going down the elevator down to the base?
Why not just chill up at the top and let them try to overtake the wall?

Had to protect the castle, and keep the gate shut. If Ygritte's wildling group had succeeded they would have been able to open the gate and let the wildlings pour through it.

So why would Mance waste any time "testing the Wall's defenses" when he's got 100,000 men? I'd just storm the fricking place
Mance still thinks the wall is manned by 1000+ men....couple that with the defenses of the wall, Id test the defenses also. Only thing I didnt get, is that Jon Snow didnt tll Sam to seal the tunnel. I would have, especially if he fails in killing Mance.
I thought it was nice that Ygritte got killed by the little boy....Karma I guess. Crazy, she still couldnt find it in her heart to kill Jon Snow. He laid it down proper it seems.
I wanted to see the battle with the giant in the tunnell as well. The giant was runnign and part of me was thinking he was gonna hit his head on the top and knock himself out cold lol.

Because Castle Black is where they live, sleep, eat, store their food, drinking water, etc. If they just stayed up on the top of the wall - the force from south of the wall would just open up the gate for Mance and they'd starve them out.

I found the tactics of defending the wall to be extremely intriguing.
The scythe was pretty fricking awesome.

It must be a difficult process because Thorne sounded like he realized he screwed up by not sealing it already and it was too late to do anything about it.

cutting the giant fight out was a huge letdown.
Yeah that was big time disappointing.

but the blackwater episode seemed more epic to me
Agreed, and in WAY less time too. That was my main problem with it, and why it was maybe the worst episode of the series...it focused 100% on the battle at Castle Black and nothing else...there is so much other shite going on right now that needs addressing/semi-resolution, but this episode was wasted (time-wise, I mean) on one single storyline. Sure, it is important, but so are ten other things. So next week is either gonna be 3 minutes on each other thing or we won't see half the shite and will be wondering what's going on for the next 9 months.

They've got bodies to burn and they need to get rest, as Mance's army will be attacking again.. I mean, Jon did say that.
He isn't going to make an attempt on Mance's life, they'd never let him get close enough, and he left his blade at Castle Black

Agreed. I'm not sure how many tunnels in the Wall there are, but even Ser Alliser told Jon that sealing the tunnel was the right call and they should've done that...so what I didn't understand was why they didn't do it even then. It's not like it was too late to set off some explosives (or whatever they were gonna use to do it). I guess it could depend on how many avenues they have to get through the wall, because sometimes they need to venture out into the north, so maybe if that's the only way through they don't even really want to seal it. Who knows.
Also, I keep coming back to this...when Tormund, Jon Snow, Ygritte, etc. climbed the wall and headed south, where did they go over the wall? was it at/near Castle Black? I thought it was, but maybe not, cuz I still don't get how they crossed the wall and then had all kinds of time/room to pillage towns left and right "on their way" to Castle Black. Or did they just cros at Castle Black and then go pillage towns just to kill time waiting for Mance and the army?

Wow
Wow what? Like I said initially, I thought it was the worst, but not because the episode itself was bad, but just because they wasted the entire episode on one thing (and it wasn't terribly "epic"). I still enjoyed the episode; it's more of a testament to how good the show is that this is one of the (if not the) worst episodes of the series.

It wasn't by Castle Black. It was at an unmanned portion of the wall

I pretty much agree with all of this. There are about 5 or 6 storylines going on right now and they completely ignored all but 1, in this episode. That was pretty disappointing. I feel like they could have summed up the battle in about 20-30 minutes and kept us up to date on other storylines with the other 20 minutes. I mean Tommen and Margery have to be getting married pretty soon, unless time has come to a halt. In episode 1 Margery mentions that she's getting married to Joffrey in two weeks, the wedding is then in episode 2. Then in episode 5 (I believe) Cersei states that Tommen and Margery are getting married in two weeks, and we haven't heard shite about that since.

The attacked nearby villages to draw out crows in the open and weaken their forces at castle black.

Dude... you're suggesting cutting the battle scene by pretty much half... so they could show a fricking WEDDING???
Sure, people get killed all the time at weddings in Westeros these days, but ... dude...
