There used to be fortifications lining the wall - back when the Night's Watch was very large and capable. Now, they're down to a fortification on the Western end (Shadow Tower), a port on the Eastern end (Eastwatch), and Castle Black - probably because it is near the end of the King's Road and roughly centered.
The other fortifications are currently unmanned - I think they mentioned those other gates have all been permanently sealed - but that I'm not sure. It would not make sense to leave the openings unguarded.

that makes sense due to lack of manpower.
also when jon and thorne were talking/arguing about flooding the tunnel/entrance it only sounded like 1 entrance.

Finally got around to watching this episode. So glad snow finally came through. What a badass.
And at the kid who gave the "I got your back, bro" nod to snow after killing his lady. I liked her but that will probably harden snow a little more. Is he now the leader of the wall?

What would they have done once they got to the gate? There's no way they were getting in. Besides, snow specifically said to drop the barrels on the mammoths and giants and use the wall mines on the climbers.

Still a huge party foul. I really don't read it that much anymore, though. The spoiler maesters are out there, and this is their last chance until next year.
