My answer for these threads is always the same: Cadence (1990).
Charlie Sheen is put into a military prison and is placed in an all-black barracks. Lawrence Fishburne (billed as "Larry" IIRC) is the sort of leader of it. And it's about how much Sheen doesn't fit in. Martin Sheen is the warden.
It is fricking excellent:

Yes, I know. And I doubt 10 % of the board has seen it.

If you can handle the EXTREMELY dark subject matter..its one of the funniest dark comedies I've ever seen. Philip Seymore Hoffman is incredible as always as is the rest of the cast.

Happiness was daaaaark.
Very good and often very funny. But so dark.

The Amateur (1981), the original that was remade recently.

It's not what I'd call overly "serious," but it likely was in 1990 though.
But there are themes of prison, racism, death, etc. Definitely not a comedy. But it's really good, and I've met very few people who have even heard of it, let alone seen it.

I listen to Harry Stewart's version of "End of My Journey" every now and then. Dude straight up belts that song out in the movie.
I'm gonna have to watch it soon because of this thread. If it isn't on streaming, I may have to break out the DVD.

It was a miniseries/made for TV movie, but World War III (1982) with Rock Hudson. It's a pretty interesting look at a potential WW3 with Russia.

never heard of it, but "an intense and entertaining thriller" sounds right up my alley
