Does it seem strange to you all, as well, when you learn an actor has retired?

The Gene Hackman thread got me thinking. It just feels like most actors eventually just pass away while still doing the occasional movie or tv appearance. Seems so odd when you hear an actor has officially retired from making movies.

Is it just me?

Yeah or they just stop being able to get work but are so vain they don’t want to admit that the business retired them. I feel like 99% of the time that’s what happens.

ETA: because I agree with OP, it feels rare and weird to hear an actor announce a retirement. Even if they develop something medical. Like Bruce Willis. There was a big announcement there and I feel like I rarely hear actors hanging it up even when they’re sick. Lots of famous examples of actors acting through cancer and other illness, (Kilner in Maverick also comes to mind).

I just take it as they are done actively seeking out roles. They prob tell their agenencies so that the transition is easier to manange. Granted, you can do that privately but I think for actors that have been around a good while and earned a large fan base, it's a good thing to do.

Doesn't mean if some perfect role, whether a lead, side, or cameo, comes along they don't take it.

That's what retirement is in all fields of work.

Sean Connery and Gene Hackman both left the industry after acting in some stinkers. Connery was in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (awful movie) and Hackman was in the aforementioned Welcome to Mooseport. Spielberg and Lucas almost lured Connery out of retirement for a cameo as Henry Jones in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull but he (wisely) remained retired.

Frankly, I'm surprised we don't hear more actors officially announce retirement, at least the big stars. I would expect more of them to get burned out as they get older.

Cary Grant might be the biggest star I can think of who publicly declared he was done acting and stayed retired.

Basically, but I don't think he's ever come out himself and officially said so, even though it was reported about a decade ago he was done. He has still been approached for roles since then.

My understanding is that he did make it official. He's a notoriously private guy, so maybe he didn't do a public announcement. I remember watching a piece about his retirement once where he stated he wanted to focus on his family and being a granddad. He has never looked back even though he does continue to get offers.

You could be right though in that he never officially retired. It's just how I understood it.

Has anyone retired at 55 to 62 at the top of their game and stayed retired as an actor or actress?

I guess Daniel Day Lewis is one that I thought of but not sure if he stays retired.

it's funny sometimes when i hear they "retired" when they haven't been in anything in a decade.

It’s odd because it’s such an easy career if you are a high earner. You can easily go years between movies just taking time off and enjoying life, or do occasional 1 day shoot cameos and stuff for tons of cash. The only hard workers in this career are low earners just getting by, and guys like The Rock who never take time off and just go movie to movie to movie - though I’m sure it’s still much more relaxing than most careers

Nicholson, I remember reading that he said he was retiring because he could no longer remember his lines.
