Denis Villeneuve says Return of the Jedi was when Star Wars went to shite

While on The Town podcast, Villeneuve shared that Star Wars blew it after two films, with 1983’s Return of the Jedi, which most fans consider a bit of a step down from 1977’s A New Hope and 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.
“I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It went to my brain like a silver bullet. I became obsessed with Star Wars,” he said. “I mean, The Empire Strikes Back is the movie that I anticipated the most in my life. I saw the movie a billion times onscreen. I was traumatized by The Empire Strikes Back. I adore Star Wars.”
“The problem is that it all derailed in 1983 with Return of the Jedi,” he continued. “It’s a long story. I was 15 years old, and my best friend and I wanted to take a cab and go to L.A. and talk to George Lucas — we were so angry! Still today, the Ewoks. It turned out to be a comedy for kids. … Star Wars became crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic, it seemed like a recipe, no more surprises. So I’m not dreaming to do a Star Wars because it feels like code is very codified.”

It started when George changed the title from Revenge of the Jedi.

I agree with him ROTJ is a step down. it's why I think it's funny people act like everything was amazing until Disney took over.

I guess I’m in the minority that I always loved Jedi.

Return of the Jedi is the weakest of the original trilogy but it's still plenty good. It's got plenty of awesome moments to make up for the overuse of Ewoks and the completely unnecessary Leia sister retcon.

It was always my least favorite as a kid. The first 30 minutes at Jabbas lair is really good. The last 30 minutes with Luke/Vader/Emperor are great. Everything in between is kinda weak.
Also Return of the Jedi is the movie that took the most abuse with the Lucas re-edits. The cgi characters in Jabba’s band are embarrassing

Haven't seen it in at least 30 years, I've only watched the first three movies, but recall hating how Skywalker acted like he was an indoctrinated cult member on ludes.

I think ROTJ isn't one of the top 3 movies anymore, but the original trilogy still trumps the other two trilogies by a huge margin.
Revenge of the Sith is on up there (the only prequel movie that is high on the list), and Rogue One is pretty damn good. Solo isn't as bad as people make it, it just has some weird narrative choices.
The Force Awakens is very formulaic - almost a direct copy of A New Hope. That sort of made sense (keep people comfortable) if you were willing to do something new in the next two movies. The problem with those is that you go to Rian Johnson deciding to "deconstruct" literally everything Star Wars related, and then JJ Abrams given the absolutely horrid task of "fixing" The Last Jedi.
Aside from Rey waking up at the beginning of The Rise of Skywalker and everything in The Last Jedi being a dream, I don't think any amount of random bullshite was going to "fix" it.

There no doubt that Jedi and the PT had their problems. But I think the comparison with the Disney films is this-
#1 - Jedi provided a reasonable and satisfying ending to the original trilogy.
#2 - the PT already had the “ending” of Anakin becoming Darth Vader, and the three movies got there is a mostly reasonable and satisfying way, that stayed true to the story.
The Disney films absolutely shat on the legacy of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo from a fan satisfaction standpoint, I would argue that the character progression of both was not only illogical, but didn’t stay true to the story. I’d also say that the Disney films rendered much of what happened in the OT moot.
Yes, there’s always been some crap in Star Wars be it the band in the cantina, Ewoks, Pod races or Rose Tico …but there was always that overarching, compelling story until Disney killed it.

Return of the Jedi is better than every Star Wars movie not named "A New Hope" or "Empire Strikes Back".

It's a great movie. People who hate it are cynical assholes. Like with the others, however, you have to watch the un-'enhanced' version to really enjoy it.

Love Jedi the most out of them all, but also watched them when I was a kid and felt it had the most badass action and had Vader and a dude that shot lightning and ewoks and a cool flying through the forest scene etc. and the beginning with Fett, etc. just has so much going on and makes it work imo. Still holds up, but it isn’t the “best film” of the OG trilogy. It’s like the Aliens to Alien. And Empire Strikes Back is Alien.

That's crazy, it was by far my favorite as a kid, and is probably still my favorite. But I am far from a star wars dork, or fanboy.

Yes Denis, please jump onboard the SW franchise and make things right.

I was 7 when ROTJ came out. It’s the first Star Wars I remember seeing at the theater. I know it’s probably a lot of nostalgia but I will defend it until my dying breath. Luke’s flip on the diving board move at the beginning was seared into my young mind and has never left it. I had a stuffed Ewok on my bed for most of my childhood so I’ll even defend them.

haha and there's nothing wrong with that. not every movie has to be Whiplash. Some movies can just be fun to watch.
