Excellent article from Forbes

As we regularly report, studios filming in the UK often incorporate a subsidiary company to make each picture there and they have to file financial statements showing everything from the total sum spent on it right down to the pension contribution paid to the staff who worked on it. Some even disclose the difference in pay between the men and women they employ and the proportion of the workforce represented by each gender.
The companies usually have code names so that they don't raise attention with fans when filing for permits to film on location and when they are correctly matched to the productions they are making it lifts the curtain on their costs.
This is because the terms governing the UK production companies state that they have to show all of the costs, from pre-production right up to delivery of the finished film. What's more, the terms add that movies made in the UK can only have one production company so studios can't set up others elsewhere and hide some of the spending in them. Crucially, the companies have to warrant that the data in their filings is true and accurate so the cost of the movies they make is indisputable. Studios don't disclose this information out of the goodness of their hearts.

They shoot in the UK to benefit from the government's Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit (AVEC) which gives them a cash reimbursement of up to 25.5% of the money they spend in the country.
To qualify for the reimbursement, at least 10% of the production costs need to relate to activities in the UK. Studios set up separate production companies for each picture so that they can demonstrate the spending to the UK government and the filings for the Disney subsidiaries behind The Marvels and Quantumania show that they cost a total of $762.4 million to make.
The movies generated a combined $682.2 million at the box office with around 50% of it going to Disney leaving the studio with a loss of $421.3 million. That doesn't include the revenue from merchandise and Blu Ray/streaming sales as they go to the studio but it too has to cover the cost of marketing the movies which could drive up its loss. However, that's just the start of the story.
The filings also show that The Marvels and Quantumania received a combined $124.9 million in reimbursements from the UK government bringing Disney's loss down to around 300 million dollars. Getting the reimbursement is far from child's play.

I honestly believe this is fraud over them spending 300+ million on an ant-man movie.

It's called corruption/fraud. They are funneling every dollar they can into their private bank accounts and draining the Disney account.

Is there no oversight committee or it's just a free-for-all on who can steal with no repercussion?

Who is gonna call em out? The government? They are doing the same thing. America is 35 trillion in debt and running a deficit while Israel has a surplus and we are sending them money lol

Just looking at the credits on the average movie shows you why these films are over-expensive, bloated scams.

Somewhere in those credits you will see a list of companies that are basically shell companies that disney owns that they offset losses to.
They'll record in accounting $400 million income off a contract to "outsource" all sound editing for 2024 to their own shell company then pay that company $50 million per movie on the individual movie budgets.
Then do the same on every other aspect of the movies they make.
It bloats the per movie budget numbers and the income recorded for the yearly "contract' doesn't count towards any movie

You know these are the kind of systematic issues I’m talking about whenever you’re on here blaming the audience every time a mid budget original script movie doesn’t crush it at the box office and pointing to as the cause of the middle class of movies being nearly completely irradiated

Id love to see the budget breakdown. I could build a damn town with 300 million dollars.

That should excite the shareholders

Yep. Disney owns these CGI companies they use. shite I wouldn't be surprised to learn they own the fricking catering company.
It's smart. If I'm making a movie and get back what I spend as a tax cut or write back, or anything else; I hire my own subsidiary companies and charge way higher than need to in order to hit my goals. Then that money spent just get funneled right back into the main company that shows all this profit we made.
Honestly I would love to see a breakdown of dollar for dollar how a movie actually ends up costing as much as these studios claim they do. I'm sure having 15 executive producers adds to the bottom line.

Somebody is skimming money somewhere or cooking the books. There's no way they'd ever spend that much money voluntarily in a supposed profit seeking venture.

So they can write off the losses and not pay the extra 200 mil in taxes. Hoorayyyy more bonuses for the execs!
If we had a flat tax for everyone youd see top movies made for 50 mil on the regular.
The gov wont investigate because they got to tax the 700 mil paid out to others already anyway.
It's lower taxes with extra steps.

Its all the reshoots. They've basically filmed three movies for the new Captain America. The last Indiana Jones had a ton of reshoots too.

They are about to spend $500 million minimum on the next Avengers. They are already at $200m just for RDJ and the Russos.

We live on the Earth in which Antman died and now is a skeleton in the Void. Even Disney can’t keep that up.
