I went to see this movie for a second time because some friends wanted to see it. On second look man did I find it cheesy, especially Killmonger. Don’t know why I thought he did great the first viewing. Maybe it was just the way the character was written

I saw it last night and liked it. I thought there were a few preachy moments, but it wasn't over the top like I thought it might be.

However, maybe it's just me, but I didn't like Michael B. Jordan's acting. I actually felt like he was the weak link when it came to the non-action scenes, and I say that as someone who thinks he's a good actor.

Also, Andy Serkis is a gift.

I thought it was ok. Maybe I've seen too many Marvel movies, but it's not in my top 5.

The international box office for this movie is really interesting. It's only made 20 million more than Fifty shades. (Fifty shades straight up beat it in a few countries).
Also looks like the first MCU movie where the domestic total will be more than the foreign

There's a reason for that.

Essentially ALL the African-American population of this country came out to see this movie. It was clearly a cultural touchstone, a 'must-see' kind of thing. That's about 10-15% of our population nationwide, and gave the movie a HUGE boost in terms of domestic box-office.

The international market is very different. Europe, and in particular the far east (China, Japan, Korea, etc.) don't have the same type of population breakdown, and thus not as much attraction. I daresay with the ethnocentrism bordering on racism in those far east countries, a cast like that of Black Panther may have even been a "turn-off" in those countries.

agree 100%

i don't get where this praise is coming from. his acting was better on the Wire when he was like 12 (and actually in the streets)

I thought MBJ’s character was a little underdeveloped and the writing for his character was poor.

Saw it last night. Almost fell asleep twice. Loved Killmonger and Andy Serkis's character. The world building was also very cool.

But the movie itself was average as cold grits. If Winter Soldier is the MCU high-water mark, this is well short of the last handful of origin stories, such as Dr Strange and Ant-Man.

Tone was far too self-serious, and lacked significant humor that the MCU has done so well. Not terribly impressed.

Speaking of Cap, where was he? The end of Civil War made it seem like he was chillin in Wakanda.

He at least went with Bucky to Wakanda and we know that Bucky is still there. From what we saw in the Infinity War trailer it looks like Steve will be there as well. So I guess that it's possible that he's still hiding out there.

the movie hasn't opened in China or Japan yet. it is doing very well in South Korea. it has earned $300M globally already

to each his own, but I disagree. some of the dialogue in the 3rd act is clunky, but it's an electric performance.

i would have loved more Jordan time, but i don't get the underdeveloped critique. we know exactly what he is about from the museum scene. the rest of his scenes help fill in.

ancestral plane visit to Oakland was top notch across the board

Saw the movie for a second time this weekend. MBJ isn't that great, and i didn't think he was the first time.
I think the film really failed at showing how badass Black Panther is as a fighter. The fight scenes were either CGI'd or live action shot so close you can barely see what's happening. The fight scene with Bucky/Cap/BlackPanther was awesome. There was nothing like that in this movie. That little bit that was, we saw in the trailer.

What is on the Wakanda's lip? Is it a tattoo of their name? is it vibranium? Does it give them something superhuman?

Why are women the best warriors there? If they aren't somehow enhanced physically, then that is ridiculously unbelievable. I was assuming that the people there are somehow enhanced by the vibranaium some way, which is why i ask about the tattoo.

Is the vibranium something that comes from an infinity stone? Do they have an infinity stone in Wakanda? I'd say no b/c if they did, it would be purple, and we know the purple one from GOTG is on Zandar.

I still enjoyed the movie. It's on Dr.Strange level for me. nothing special.

Just saw it for the first time yesterday. I'd agree that it's probably on the Dr. Strange level, though I believe I enjoyed the characters more in Black Panther.

I liked the look of Wakanda, and I really liked the look of the first time T'Challa was challenged. The colors they had going on made that scene really striking to me.

However, I do think the action in general was a weak point, at least as far as MCU movies go. After just watching Civil War and the great fights in it, this certainly didn't compare.

Also, while I did like the movie, I feel like T'Challa shone brighter in Civil War than in his own movie.

Replacing Downey/Stark will also be interesting; very few guys have the smarts to do what he does (Ant Man for example, the current guy just uses the suit, he didn't make it). Spiderman might, he has made his webs.

I thought they gift wrapped that answer for us with BP's sister moving to a new outreach area in Oakland. she will be heading up all the building from now on since her stuff was already on a new level above Tony's.

quote:

Do you think that's the "must view" part of this film? Setting up Cap's death and putting BP in line of succession?

Yes.

From everything we've seen so far, Black Panther is a natural leader and a skilled diplomat and even his father said for someone who hates diplomacy, he's really good at it.

I'll agree with this. Head will be the new leader going forward and I thought they began to set that up in Civil War when he was able to see and admit his rushed decision was incorrect.

As for the movie, I finally saw it yesterday and thought it was solid but nothing special for me. I really will need to watch this one a second time to give it a good judgment but right now it is bottom half of MCU for me. I know it is better than IM2 and 3, Thor 1 and 2 and Ultron but not better than any of the Captain Americas, Avengers, Iron Man, or GOTGs.

it could be Thor for all we know but he's the King of Asgard now and that will significantly cut into his responsibilities with the Avengers

There is no Asgard any more. I think it's going to be Strange and BP after IW 4 as the Stark and Rogers of the next phase.

He doesn't even like acting all that much and would prefer to direct. Also I'm sure the amount of discipline it takes to get as ripped as he does for the role gets old after a while.

No.

The people of Asgard are still alive.

Thor, Loki and Sif are going to rebuild Asgard somewhere in space or on Earth.

Sheesh. I still haven't seen it yet because I don't like crowded theaters. I have some friends that said that theaters in their areas were sold out yesterday afternoon. I guess I will still have to wait a few weeks.

I saw it w/the wife Sunday night in Dallas at Northpark in regular digital format and it was pretty packed.

The wife loved it and puts it near the top on her Marvel scale. I thought it was pretty good as well and would also put it some where in the middle topish half though that could change after repeat viewings.

To me the only bad CG parts that stuck out were a few bits during the car chase, some of the shots in the last fight when he did a swing around one of those magnetic things in the tunnel, but mostly the scene at the waterfall w/everyone dancing during the coronation. The compositing for the various people was horrible. (though I guess I could at least give them points for using people in costumes instead of going fully CG)

The rhinos that so many complain about I thought were pretty good. I suspect that is in part due to having seen the very mediocre The Legend of Tarzan the other day on a movie channel. If you guys want to see truly bad rhinos and awful attempts at African jungles and villages go check that one out.

Just saw it again. (Movie Pass, bitches)

Still very good IMO. CGI issues still very prevelant, especially in the final fight. I still wanted to see more of Wakanda than the 3 sets they built.

Michael B Jordan is a fricking great actor. Can't wait for Fahrenheit 451 and Creed 2

And Chadwick Boseman is 41 YEARS OLD

Movie was great. Definitely top 3 or 4 marvel movie. Minor cgi issues aside great acting, beautiful cinematography and a well written script. It's really hard to make a freaking super hero movie that makes you fully empathize with the bad guy.

I couldn't help but think of the first X-men when Wolverine did that on the Statue of Liberty

I liked the movie and think the franchise has a lot of promise. The fighting wasn't as good as other Marvel movies as others have stated.
