re: Bill Simmons says Zion wont be a Pelican in 5 or 6 years - corndeaux
I would argue one where most glamour markets have a competitive team, but that there is an overall cultural sense that small markets, like in the NFL, can do the right things and win it all(
The Raptors just won a title. The Cavs went to 4 straight Finals. The Bucks won 60 games. T...

re: Bill Simmons says Zion wont be a Pelican in 5 or 6 years - corndeaux
hat story line was starting to stagnate
Link? For whom? The finer point is that hoop heads, who post on an obscure Pelicans message board, were tired of the Warriors. Casual fans, who don't, liked being able to tune in in June and know who the Warriors were
So for the...

re: Bill Simmons says Zion wont be a Pelican in 5 or 6 years - corndeaux
nd trying not to be the crazy person yelling at my radio listening to the broken logic and missed counterpoints to Rachel Nichols defending these trends in basketball.
I figured Nichols would drive this board nuts with her arguments.
it would fail to maximize the amount...

re: Bill Simmons says Zion wont be a Pelican in 5 or 6 years - corndeaux
Even if the Pels keep Boogie, that clock is still ticking. Teams are under constant pressure to provide what players want/need. Which is a good thing IMO. Look at how the Pels have stepped up their game in just 2 months. That doesn't happen without Boogie leaving and then Davis torching the organ...

re: Bill Simmons says Zion wont be a Pelican in 5 or 6 years - corndeaux
I agree. That's all we can ask. Denying player movement/empowerment is a thing because Simmons said something (negative??) about the Pels/Zion is absurd. It's not just a generational thing- the league has set up it's rules and has been so successful that it makes sense for some of the very be...

re: Bill Simmons says Zion wont be a Pelican in 5 or 6 years - corndeaux
this “player movement” mania really comes down to is KD and Kawhi, who are both unique personalities in unique positions, and were completely free agents.
Players are turning down $$ to go where they want. That's unusual and antithetical to the entire way the CBA structure was buil...

re: Bill Simmons says Zion wont be a Pelican in 5 or 6 years - corndeaux
It's not just Paul George though. It's been a trend for a while among the top players to use their leverage to get themselves to different teams. Simmons is not the guy who's really thoughtful about it. If people are interested in "player empowerment" era, they should listen to the latest Lowe Po...

re: Jeff Bzdelik primary candidate to replace Erman - corndeaux
Right. The "few years" being the key part for those that are hoping that Gentry is a care-taker for this year, then shepherded somewhere else (either within or outside the org) for 20/21. Either an extraordinary deal or a promise of coaching staff stability is needed to pull an ...

re: Jeff Bzdelik primary candidate to replace Erman - corndeaux
Bzdelik is good. If he, or any other high profile guy, comes on board, it is not good for those that want Gentry gone ASAP Quality assistant coaches don't sign on for short term gigs. Especially after the mess Bzdelik just went through in Houston, I doubt he comes to NO w/o some guarantee of ...

re: Are the Pels playing Christmas Day this year? - corndeaux
10 teams. And they choose those teams by stars/markets Locks: Lakers Clippers Sixers Celtics Bucks Warriors Rockets Probable: Knicks (pure market size + no one really wants to play the noon game) Blazers (late game west coast rematch v Warriors makes a ton of sense) That's 9 alread...

re: Pelicans or OKC - Who got the best trade value? - corndeaux
Short term: Clippers. They landed Kawhi and Paul George. They are the title favorites now and perhaps for the next couple of years Long Term: Both teams did well. Better chance the Lakers fall apart because LeBron is getting older and they are not exactly a stable organization. OKC haul is dam...

re: Bill Reiter (CBS SR) says Silver should intervene if Kawhi signs with LAL - corndeaux
The issue for me is a player on a +/- $35mm contract sabotaging the interests of his billion dollar employer and millions of fans while under contract. It’s beyond unprofessional.
I don't see a lot of threads calling out Kawhi and PG this morning. So is it demanding a trade,...

re: Daniel Erman (Defensive Coach) is leaving the Team - corndeaux
I will be shocked and disappointed if Finch has been named head coach in waiting. At odds with being a first rate, process oriented organization that Griffin has been presenting. Perhaps they really do like Finch. Great. Why limit your options with Zion Williamson to a current assistant coach? Do...

re: Bill Reiter (CBS SR) says Silver should intervene if Kawhi signs with LAL - corndeaux
So fans usually are also in favor of rules that limit player movement.
Sure. I do think 1) those interests are aligned, but for different reasons, which may not matter at all. 2) it would behoove fans to try to understand why players want out of certain situations. Sometim...

re: Bill Reiter (CBS SR) says Silver should intervene if Kawhi signs with LAL - corndeaux
Oh I agree. And I'm glad the Pels told Davis and the Lakers to frick off. It never really made sense to trade him then since Boston was unable to even be a part of the discussion, unless the offer was beyond overwhelming. Interesting hypo- what happens if there is no Rose rule and the Celtics can ...

re: Bill Reiter (CBS SR) says Silver should intervene if Kawhi signs with LAL - corndeaux
fans of teams interests align with the teams
This is the part I would seriously question. A hell of an assumption that ownership is doing everything they can to win/be first rate. Whereas, a fan is always expecting a win/quality product...
The players should be as locked down publicly as the coaches and GMs are
That is a band aid on a decapitation. Ok. Players get fined for talking about playing with each other publicly. Just like coaches, GMs, owners, they continue to do so off the record Edit- and it still le...

re: Bill Reiter (CBS SR) says Silver should intervene if Kawhi signs with LAL - corndeaux
I always come back to what the owners are worried about with player movement. The have a cartel on professional basketball. They are all billionaires with money from other ventures. The teams can make money with revenue sharing + tv contract. Franchise values are through the roof. There is a sala...

re: Bill Reiter (CBS SR) says Silver should intervene if Kawhi signs with LAL - corndeaux
you don't get to dictate exactly where you are going and then tank your value so that they don't have to sell the farm to get you.
The Pels could have told Davis to frick off. He can request a trade to wherever. And LA did indeed sell the farm for him. So what's the problem?...
