On Douban, China’s IMDb-esque platform, the film holds a 6.8 rating out of 10 (link in Chinese)—almost half of science-fiction and action movies rated by Douban users have a better score. Outside of China, Black Panther is on track to become the highest-rated superhero movie, according to Rotten Tomatoes; 97% of reviews from critics have been positive.

Some moviegoers disliked Black Panther because they felt Marvel was trying too hard to be politically correct (link in Chinese). While many reviewers on Douban stopped short of leaving overtly racist comments about the film, many discussed their discomfort of being surrounded by so much blackness.

“Maybe the Chinese are still not used to a film full of black people,” wrote one reviewer on Douban (link in Chinese). The commenter said he had to pinch himself more than 10 times to stay awake during the movie because “Black Panther is black, all the major characters are black, a lot of scenes are black, the car-chasing scene is black—the blackness has really made me drowsy.”

Another reviewer who came into the theater late made a similar observation: “When I entered the theater, a bunch of black people was fighting in the night… I’ve never been in a theater so dark that I couldn’t find my seat.”

Someone else said the experience was worse in 3D (link in Chinese): “The film is filled with black actors and actresses. Also, because the film’s colors are a bit dark, it’s nearly a torture for the eyes to watch the film’s 3D version in the theater.”

Even w/the kind of negativity discussed in your link it still debuted with a $67 million take which is the 4th highest for an MCU movie in China. It's possible the so called Chinese angst towards seeing black people in movies is exaggerated and simply has more to do with the fact that most black centric movies focus on things that Chinese people don't relate to in the same way an average US movie goer likely wouldn't care to see the average Chinese, Japanese, or Bollywood flick.

Really the only kinds of movies that ever seem to have a good shot at success across all cultures are the types heavy on action and special effects.

quote:

‘Black Panther’ Tops $500M Overseas, $1B WW With $67M China Bow

The overseas figure sees T’Challa rise on the charts to pass Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Dark Knight, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

In China, the start is slightly above the range most saw ahead of the weekend and reps the 4th biggest MCU and superhero opening ever in the market. The Wakanda crew sparred with and was slightly edged by last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming which keeps the crown of No. 3 MCU/superhero bow ever.

The Middle Kingdom bow, which includes $7.3M from IMAX screens for a March debut record, was strong and landed 122% ahead of GOTG, 55% ahead of Ant-Man, 40% above Doctor Strange and 16% mightier than Thor: Ragnarok. Still, the film may find itself hampered by a not-so-hot score on local reviews site Douban. At 6.8, it’s lower than the superhero comps, but higher than the local Monster Hunt movies. There’s also competition ahead, so the final projection here is in the $100M-$110M range. Either way, the BP phenomenon is still on track for over $600M internationally and around $1.2B or more worldwide.

This movie sucked, I saw it last night and was expecting it to be great but was very disappointed. I could care less about the racial SJW aspect that was very apparent because plenty of movies have that nowadays and I knew it going in. It was extremely slow except for the casino scene/car chase and the the end was extremely forced, awkward, and anti-climatic. The lady kings guard, Michael B and the sister were good characters/performances but they don’t save what was just a bad movie. I guess I just can’t shake my colonizing ways.

I don't think the SJW stuff was that strong. You have to accept some things come with the geographical region they were in. It's Africa so there will be mostly black people who harbor a lot of hate towards white colonists. Sometimes it is just what it is and it is ok for black people to root for the home team

I think it was good, not great. It's on the same level as Iron Man 3, Cap 1, Thor 1. It may crack my top 10 but some of the acting really killed it for me.

Action scenes were not that great and I thought the fighting was a little off which is strange because I thought the fighting in Creed was excellent.

I liked the development of Killmonger and his motivation, but once he peaked at the ritual, it went downhill for me.

Cue the "that's racist gif", but I thought two of the best acting jobs in the movie were Serkis and Freeman.

I forgot about Serkis, he was awesome in that role. Wish we would’ve gotten more of him

Finally got a chance to see it. We tried opening weekend and every showing in the vicinity was sold out. We don't like to pay advanced purchase fees so we decided to wait.

It was still a pretty full room with about half black, half white audience.

Pretty decent movie to introduce everything Wakanda. I enjoyed it.

The funniest thing was that, after the movie, all the black folks got up and left, and when the mid credits scene started , I heard a collective "oh shite!" from the folks in the hallway trying to leave. After that scene they exited. Most of the white folks stayed to watch the typical post credits scene at the end.

Yep. MBJ was over the top a bit though I thought he was good early on. The accents were distracting and it often felt like the actors were struggling with the lines to say them in the accents. But overall the acting was decent to good. Serkis was the best.

I thought the same. Like Bozeman couldn't do the choreography or something. It was slow in spots and then totally muddled in others.

From a technical point of view, I want to see this on an LG OLED TV. Everything was so dark, that the dark scenes appeared washed out on the projection screen, without much contrast. I'm sure it didn't appear as intended at times and will probably look much better on a great TV with HDR.

The CGI was very spotty. Most of it was not done well and made it appear cartoonish and flat.

I think the movie, entertaining at times, failed overall because the interweaving of too many stories over too long a time. The first third of the movie was unimpressive, boring and too long. I think the movie would have done better to have more character development of the story of Killmonger, making his rise and ascention to the throne the real climax and ending of the movie with his rise to ominous power, setting up a continuation sequel where we see that Black Panther, after being thrown from the cliff, has survived in the scene during credits, discovered by the Jabari's and ending with M'Baku standing over Black Panther.

But that's just me. I like cliffhangers and a reason to look forward to the next movie.

I thought Winston Duke's character, as M'Baku, was well done and I look forward to seeing this actor in other movies. His time on-screen was too brief.

The Klaw role was well done by Andy Serkis and lots of fun to watch him. He seemed to really genuinely enjoy the role.

The rest of the black cast's fake, contrived accents reminded me of every movie ever made about people from Louisiana where the actors' awful attempts to have a Louisiana accent fail miserably and distracted from the overall enjoyment of the movie. Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett were just ridiculously terrible in their roles and accents.

Finally, I'd just like to point out that Martin Freeman, a white man, ultimately saves the world, not Black Panther.

For the fifth weekend in a row, Disney and Marvel's Black Panther is the weekend's number one film at the domestic box office, becoming the first film to accomplish that feat since Avatar in 2009. The film is also only the seventh film to ever gross over $600 million at the domestic box office as it continues to dominate, now less than $18 million shy of topping The Avengers and becoming the highest grossing superhero movie of all-time.

I know Michael B. Jordan is too big of name but I would love to see a prequel series of his transformation to Killmonger.

I'm not a comics guy but I might try getting into the Black Panther comics.

Decided to see it prior to IW coming out this summer. The cinematography was really good. 3D would have made me puke.

Michael B Jordan blows everyone off the screen in every damn scene he's in. That dude is an absolute movie star (and holy yolked as frick), and the main Black Panther dude can't hold a candle to him.

This. I was never on the side of BP. From his political stance to his acting, I was just kinda, ehh. Michael B Jordan was really really good though.

He's one of my faves. Very intriguing character with lots of nuance.

Saw BP this weekend, thought it was pretty good. Not a comics book guy either but has watched every Marvel movie.

Finally saw it and really enjoyed it.

I really liked Jordan and Duke's performances but I didn't find Killmonger to be the nuanced character that other people made him out to be. Sure, he got a raw deal as a kid but as an adult he was the standard megalomaniac wanting to rule the world type. Even his justifications for it were paper thin and standard for the genre. Even Darth Vader had supposed "greater good" justifications for his actions. Still loved the performance, though.

I though the nuance and complexity came more from Duke's character and the Wakandan society itself.

Just saw it. I felt it was a mix of Star Wars, Roots, Lion King and Malcolm X. Entertaining but far from riveting. Lots of liberal and racial subliminal messages.

I watched Black Panther in China on Thursday night. There were 6 other people in the theater, and 4 of them left before it was over. This is anecdotal, but I've watched Marvel movies in China in packed theaters. I remember they loved Guardians of the Galaxy 2 last year.
