It helps that there is a an entire world built in Disneyworld to replicate this world. And its pretty immersive with a really good ride involved.

The only thing I am surprised about is that Cameron was able to drag it out so long before making 2 and 3.

Seems like he just made in before the timer went off.

I don’t know a single person who enjoys these movies or has seen the sequels.

This is always my point...nobody ever talks about them IRL, I know one guy who referenced seeing it and he sees everything. Yet it'll make 2 billion dollars somehow. No cultural references, nothing. People talk about Top Gun Maverick, people quote Titanic, etc.

It took over TikTok for a couple of weeks after its release. You don’t hear conversation about it because you don’t want to hear conversation about it basically.

With the first avatar as the standard, this doesn’t say what you think it says.

Avatar 3 makes 67% less than Avatar 1 even though prices have gone up considerably

The movies show a strong father defending his family. I would think the culture warriors on the right would love this series, especially the ones complaining about how men are always seen as weak and stupid particularly in Disney movies. You can complain about the environmental message all you want but the right should love the portrayal of the strong family unit instead of just saying it has no cultural relevance.

What? Avatar 3 had a higher domestic opening weekend.

Are you just counting a full year run vs 2 weeks?

It's definitely not for willful blindness, I promise. It may be due to demographics/other choices (I'm not on Tik Tok, etc.). Other things like that come to mind - it seems half the country watches and knows about anime, when I can't remember the last time it ever came up in the slightest way in an IRL discussion/reference.

But I definitely think it lacks some element of reach similarly-successful movies have, and I don't think that's bias. Guys my age use memes and jokes relating to other major films, none for Avatar.

The part about it being a theatrical experience makes sense to me...but I'm still surprised that that element doesn't pop up more IRL conversations.

Who sees these movies? I saw the first one, it was fine, have no interest in seeing it again, or any of the sequels. Don't know anyone who has seen them, my kids have no interest in them,

This is me also. I don’t get it

No one discusses it with you because you probably don’t hang around people who do watch/enjoy it and even if you do hang around them, they know you’re not into it so they don’t talk about it with you.

I like watching football strategy/scheming videos and particularly enjoy videos of people drawing up unique football plays and the reads and blocking that go into them. But I don’t talk about them with my GF who I am with damn near every day because I know she doesn’t care one bit about them, just like she doesn’t talk about the random fantasy books she enjoys because she knows I’m not into them.

Must be popular in other countries. I see almost no one talking about these movies, and I don't know a soul who has seen the most recent two.

Story-wise, what's the draw?

Not everyone cares solely about the story. These movies are cinematic events. Look at every movie that has grossed over a billion dollars. Do you see any Best Screenplay winners? Just ignore LOTR: ROTK lol. Some people just want popcorn movies and that's what these are.

I don't believe this one gets to 2B. It's already 300 mil behind Way of Water

Maybe so. But it got to a billion in what, 14 or 15 days? If it has any legs AT ALL, seems like it should stick around long enough to get another billion.

Not when you take inflation into account. Avatar: Fire and Ash made $89 million in its opening weekend compared to Avatar's $77 million. It's true. However, the latter would be $116 million had it opened in 2025 vis 2009.

They're no different than the Avengers movies at this point. They have their target audience who is going to see pretty much every one of them in 3D/imax and maybe multiple times.

If you look at the highest grossing films of all-time when adjusted for inflation, four of the Top 10 were either nominated or won for screenplay.

The movie has already grossed >$300 million in the U.S. Statistically more people around you are likely to have seen Avatar than any other movie this year. Maybe people just don't like to talk to you?

And it is also popular in other countries.
