Gave Amsterdam 30 mins of my life and had to shut it off. Just bad.

- Amsterdam ($80 million budget, $31 million box office)

Two of those are objectively terrible movies, which is no fault of hers (Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad) - in fact she's the absolute best thing in both movies and pretty much the only reason to even bother watching them when they are free to stream.

I haven't seen Bombshell, but it made twice its budget. It's also a movie about the Roger Ailes scandal and came out at the same time as TWO other projects about the exact same subject.

Amsterdam also had poor reviews due to the plot, not the acting, and bombed - but no one is saying it's because of Christian Bale, so why blame Margot Robbie?

I think there may be some confusion here bc there are two Suicide Squad movies. The reboot was awesome. That’s the one with Peacemaker and the big starfish.

I didn't even think about that (missed the "The" at the beginning), but the second movie was the one they were referring to.

Interestingly it seems there were a ton of factors involved:

quote:

The film's box office underperformance was generally attributed to its release during the COVID-19 pandemic, the fact that it was also available for streaming on HBO Max at the same time as its theatrical release, piracy allowed by the streaming release, the R-rating which limited younger audiences, the poor reception to the first Suicide Squad, the lack of bankable stars such as Will Smith, and confusion from general audiences over its relationship to the first film caused by their similar titles

More about cumulative reputation. Bale has been in a lot more profitable (and good) movies.

Between American Hustle (2013) and Ford v Ferrari (2019), 7 of the 8 movies Bale starred in either bombed or underperformed relative to expectations. The one outright success was The Big Short, an ensemble film whose financial success has never been attributed to Bale. Exodus was a disaster. Out of the furnace and Hostiles were modest in budget but had massive marketing campaigns trying to push Bale's star power. Vice racked up the award nominations, but the studio was hoping for $200+ million and got only 75.

These things swing back and forth. Robbie is making interesting choices with interesting directors, and balancing that with studio franchise stuff. Her gambles haven't paid off as well as she probably hoped the past few years, but, similar to Bale, she has more often than not been praised in these films that have otherwise underperformed.

If you were honest with yourself you might think you just like to pick fights on message boards. Bale's films before Amsterdam were Thor, Ford v Ferrari, and Vice.

Fairly or not the Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey movies are not well regarded and those were attached to her reputation. If they had been better liked that would have been a good thing.

The first time I saw anything about this movie was yesterday while watching football. Maybe they fricked up with the marketing.
