Just finished first ep. it’s not terrible, but it’s just....not good. Like that other guy said, the writing is rudimentary and amateurish and the acting is all over the place (that exchange in the garden of Bancroft’s house - whoof). The forced nudity and humor are awful. At least the production value is higher than most of the other Netflix schlock
Ortega’s hot as frick. Starting ep 2 now.

I still enjoyed it. The overall concept is very cool, and I think the general lines of the story are compelling. "Bad acting" doesn't bother me. There is a lot of lazy writing in the details of how things come together, but that doesn't bother me too much when looking at the whole picture. If this were to become a long running show then the flaws in the writing could build on each other though, and I probably would lose patience.

Max Freaking Headroom. Well sort of, but close enough. Love it.

Joel Kinnaman isn't a good actor.

Finally finished so Spoilers through the end of season 1 are below.
I did not like the ending at all. It just didn't seem natural that Takeshi would go after his sister like that. Family seemed important enough to him that going their separate ways seemed like the path he should have taken. In fact that was such a believable path he used that to trick her.
On top of that, the arrest scene at the end seemed awkward and tedious basically laying out all the facts that we already knew one more time for the benefit of Bancroft.
I'm tempted to read the books now because I really loved the world they built and it sounds like the biggest problems with the story stemmed from deviating from the book. I also like that they ended things in a way that a season 2 wouldn't necessarily feature the same people outside of Takeshi, likely in a different sleeve. I kept waiting for Takeshi to get his original sleeve back during the season, but with Kinnamen being one of the bigger names attached to launch the new show, that just wasn't going to happen.
There's just so much left to explore. I hope they renew it for season 2, keep the production value high but go with a better story.

Never heard of the books or the show until I stumbled upon it last Sat. Watched the whole thing over the weekend and thought it was great.
Yeah you can complain about the writing some but I've learned you just have to go with it sometimes to enjoy it , especially sci-fi.
But I really loved the style and thought the production quality was great. It's crazy that Netflix puts out so many of these shows with high production value and I never hear anything about them.

Really? That bitch was killing everyone around him. Murdering kids and shite. Killed the love of his life and all his first friends. Wasn't exactly his sister he knew as a child. I mean I love my sister too but if I see her kill some kids you better believe I will testify in court against her.
But with that said the sister plot and the freedom fighter plot was terrible and unbelievable.

Was it cyberpunk? Yes. Therefore I loved it.

Best nude female fight scene since Marco Polo.

Everyone that he had known for about a week. His training as an Envoy was to use these people and treat them as expendable. I believe they also said he had "been on ice" for 250 years, which I assume is turned off rather than being tortured in VR. So from his perspective Quell, the woman he loved, died very recently. While I can understand why he'd be attracted to Ortega, he wouldn't have been in a place to fall for her and be as attached to the "cannon fodder" as he was.
Speaking of Quell, when Rei said she conveniently had a backup of Quell hidden somewhere, internal monologue Quell said something along the lines of "The unanswerable question that gives them what the want." This was a flashback to Envoy training and I took it to mean that it was clearly a lie told to keep the mark on the hook a little longer. Kovacs even said no to exchanging his sister for this alleged backup of Quell. Yet they end the season with Kovacs appearing to get ready to go find this back up.

Is this worth watching?
Yes. The story isn't bad, it's just not great. As a mainstream show that will appeal to everyone it is lacking. As a scifi show it is fantastic. The world they built is amazingly rich and deep, with beautiful visuals and hopefully way more stories to tell.

My interpretation was that when Rei mentioned Quell, regardless of if she really had a backup or was just bluffing for time, he thought back and remembered Quell's thoughts on immortality being bad and that everyone should have a real death to make their life have meaning. Her worries about the wealthy taking advantage of immortality, which she told him about right before the bomb ended up being true.

I enjoyed it for the most part, the end was all too cutesy for me though.
Hated the freedom fighter subplot and the love interest in that sequence though. I couldn't imagine following her to my death.

I don’t want to start a new thread, but obviously can’t read through this one, so I’m just going to ask here how is it?
