I don’t want to start a new thread, but obviously can’t read through this one, so I’m just going to ask here how is it?

The consensus from everyone is that the visuals and production value are top notch. The main complaints, which are loudest from the book readers, are problems with the story and acting. Those weakness are there but I do think they are overstated by the book readers, or at least aren't as big of a deal to non book readers. I'd equate it to WestWorld in terms of quality if WW didn't have such a great cast.

I enjoyed it, but yeah it seemed like they shoved so much stuff in the last part of it.

Did you just ignore the fact that most of the rich people had clones?

I did not, but that's a good point.

quote:

Beyond that a good portion of the bodies that aren’t donated from dead people are from criminals, like the one kovacs is using in the show. If someone is put away for 200 years in storage for crimes, their sleeve is generally given away.

This part I didn't quite grasp until I was a little further in. Sounds like people pay mortgages on sleeves which implies they're indeed scarce.

quote:

but there are also extra bodies from Catholics on Earth due to all jails being virtual storage. So for Catholics a 20 year jail sentence is a death sentence due to them refusing to come back and be resleeved.

I'm a Hodor when it comes to this show but if Rei was reprogramming the poors to simply prevent them from being spun up in virtual, and not because new sleeves awaited them, then that makes total sense.

Now, about the rest of my critique. The moving of consciousness around, not using your brain, and still being you. It's hard to dive into that concept.

Question: Spoiler!!!!!!!!

What was the purpose of the rich man going to the refuge camp and acting like God? He got sick and died. There was nothing else followed up on that story. Just wondering why that was so important.

The purpose of that was to show how rich he was. He's so rich that he can throw away a sleeve for an afternoon of charitable ministering to the untouchables. An event that is a regular occurrence. He probably gets some political capital for the gesture, and maybe even a few warm fuzzies, but it is likely a status thing as much as anything.

He kept bringing that up sure but that was a ruse. He clearly cared about the people he was involved with. You learn this in one of the first episodes when he gets pissed that the protector kills the female thief. And it is pretty obvious he cares for the people helping him in the current time period, regardless of his hardened exterior.

While I can understand why he'd be attracted to Ortega, he wouldn't have been in a place to fall for her and be as attached to the "cannon fodder" as he was.

Did you even watch this series? lol. He clearly cared about her, it was shown in multiple scenes. Was the hospital arm scene skipped over by you lol? He only walked away from her at the end because Ryker was coming back. Obviously Quell was supposed to be his true love but the sister killed her too. No idea how you came to your conclusion he should have left his sister alone still.

Yes I watched. My point is he shouldn't have cared based on who he was which made going after Rei not be the way I thought things should go.

They made it a point to show that was not who he was on the inside in every time period. He cared for his sister, cared for the freedom fighters and fell in love with Quell, cared for the thief, cared for his team in the current timeline. He wasn't soulless ever, no matter how the protectors and envoy tried to make him.

Just finished it. I'm usually not a fan of cyber punk but I genuinely liked it and enjoyed it and I think that's because it was taken in small doses and didn't go completely over the top and wasn't completely hopeless.

The concept of sleeves, stacks and our memories and consciousness being digitized may be a cool concept to watch and discuss but I honestly hope we never see technology like that ever because it's a perversion of the cycle of life and completely removes the sacred institution of death itself.

It's kind of cool seeing a future like that and I honestly would love to know how the protectorate came to be and how the United States of America disappeared.

I fricking love Ortega. She's the right mix of being legitimately very cute but still so damn hot at the same time. She's a firecracker that would be very difficult for any man to handle.

Miriam is hot as hell but I still can't get over her freakishly long skeleton like fingers as that was just creepy.

The naked sword fight was something that was so amazing to watch.

You know I really believe that services like head in the clouds really exist today in some 3rd world shitholes.

With all this said, I really don't see how they can stretch this more than 3 seasons. Quell alone is not enough for that and we're used to seeing the lead actor and he's giving up the sleeve now. I hope Ortega returns as well.

Solid show. Really liked it. Will stick around.

There are only 3 books, but if they follow them at all every book story is set on a different planet. So they could pretty much go any number of ways to have farther seasons than that. The universe is pretty huge and there are any number of things Kovacs could get up to.

Not sure why that's so hard really. Control of the brain is pretty much all action potentials/current sent through the nerves, so if they had a way to map it out no reason why it couldn't be transferred (this is ignoring the soul aspects of course, which is an entirely other ball of wax).

We are talking about a world where they can jack into virtual reality just like the world of Neuromancer or The matrix. If you have that sort of control over the human mind then moving the mind from one place to another and storing it isn't that big of a leap.

Your point about hormonal and chemical differences with the bodies is fair though, and it's discussed a bit in the show and quite a bit more in the books.

Kovacs said in the show how ordinary people couldn't be resleeved more than 2-3 times without going insane, and that's why people were most resleeved into clones of themselves if they did it often. There would be no compatibility issues with a clone.

Also, Kovacs was dealing with leftover nicotine addiction that was left behind in the body of Ryker itself. In the books it is made fairly clear that a good portion of Kovacs and Ortega's attraction to each other is based on chemistry/hormonal things that were left over from her relationship with Ryker. When Kovacs gets double sleeved in the book he uses a combat synthetic sleeve for the body going after Rei and that sleeve isn't attracted to Ortega like the Ryker sleeve is. So your concerns and questions about that are kinda touched on and agreed with to an extent there.

I just finished it, and thought it was worth watching. There are some moments where the acting is bad and the story is a little choppy, but the concepts, setting and action definitely make worth it IMO.

This show was a nice change of pace for me. I'd recommend it as well. Needed more Ortega nudity cause she was a smoke show

I can't say enough good things about Joel Kinnaman's posture and height giving him a strong walking manner. It's macho and alpha as frick and you can see it in the way he walks which is assertive and authoritative.

I already saw it in House of Cards when he played Will Conway, the GOP nominee for President but it just really jumps out at you when he's the lead in another show.

Pretty much agree with this. I liked the concepts, thought they did a great job at building the fantasy world, loved the visuals especially considering it is Netflix, just feel the acting lacked at times and the story fell flat and was a mess in the end. I almost wish everything with his sister was left out
