Finally got to this. I haven’t read the book.

The English dub worked better than most I’ve seen. As far as the rest, it’s much darker than Dunkirk, 1917 and certainly Saving Private Ryan. The cinematography and score is haunting to say the least.

As it’s really in German you have to remember the more “austere”screenplay and dialogue but the character development and relationships came through for me.
A Hollywood version would be more sappy and probably a love story developed from one of the minor storylines in this version.

It’s a movie that will stick with you along the lines of Schindlers list. Painfully realistic with no soft, feel good landing. Only a lesson for the world.

You don’t really get to know the characters in any personal way. In fact, there were times I didn’t even know what friend it was that was dying.

This is a fair criticism.

They did a good job of developing Kat though but left so much out for the others. I didn't particularly care how they took him out though.

The German delegation vs the French was fine for what the movie was but the german general and his assistant storyline was so unoriginal.

hauntingly great. I watched with German subtitles because I dont like when the voice is off from the person speaking.

I have not read the book so I took it as a war movie. Kat a Paul characters developed enough to hook me and they were the ends of the spectrum. Family guy and kid. The other character development wasnt needed as I felt them from the loss that Paul did.

This is a great movie.
Great story. Great visual representation of the book.

I watched knowing nothing will end well. But that's the story that needs to be told.

The juxtaposition in this movie was amazing.

I thought the same thing. The back and forth from being in an absolute nightmare in a trench or on the battlefield to those in power eating off fine china in safety and then back to the nightmare.

I also like how it went pretty quickly from everyone's happy and excited to fight to.....oh shite, this is not what we thought. You really get thrown right into the thick of it. I actually think that hits harder than if it were a slow intro into all of it.

Finally set time aside to watch it. About what I expected. Horrific and tragic, but overall, it didn't land with me beyond that. Already seen 1917 and Tolkien, both of which dealt with the horrors and madness of WW1 trench warfare.

The one thing which annoyed me is the characters seeming lack of awareness of anything around them. Yes, young naive men going to face a war which was beyond their ability to grasp. Expected early on, but over time, instinct should kick in and, well... these guys were just idiots.

Was depressed for days after watching this. It’s the same thing as when I read it in High School. Like we should all should apologize to God in unison. War is man’s greatest failure. What a difficult viewing it was.

Shouldn't even be in the same sentence as Schindlers List, IMO.

I thought it was a good movie, but it will not leave a lasting impact like SL did. The cinematography was really amazing, and oscar worthy, but I had no real connection to the characters (as the director probably intended).

It started out absolutely amazingly with the seamstresses resowing the uniforms of the soldiers, I thought it might be a different take on a war film showing the day-to-day impacts on Germany society as a whole... but it did not. There were pretty obvious lulls in teh film, when I wanted it to just move along to the underlying story. Overall, it was still a good film, one I'll probably never watch again.

Movie was insane.

Really good at capturing the horrors of war.

The end was brutal.

Highly recommend.
