DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE IN ANYTHING BUT GERMAN!

Sorry for the old man caps but seriously, German with subs only, you'll ruin or sacrifice some of the experience otherwise.

One of the best war/antiwar movies I've ever seen, 10/10.

Netflix does a fair amount of their bigger. movies with a limited release in theaters. I think Knives Out will be out for a few weeks before it streams.

This was out in NYC for a week I think.

I'm at the part where the guy runs out to meet the women in the field...what's he doing? Looks like trying to blend in and deserting?

Will watch tonight, the original was one of my favorite movies of all time. The 1979 remake didn't really do it justice.

Find it hard to believe it can be as authentic as the original, but we will see.

Agree. It was the same for the Dark TV series. There is a certain amount of emotion that comes from the original actor in their native language that just doesn't translate.

Haven't watched yet but probably same as Das Boot. Don't be lazy.

Just finished it, pretty bad and not at all the same storyline to the original. Ernst Junger’s ‘Storm of Steel’ would make a great movie. However, I do feel awful about throwing good, young and meaningful lives away needlessly. The movie nailed that part.

What a conflicting feeling after watching this movie.

It was good…

It was NOT All Quiet on the Western Front.

Seemed like it was made by someone who was told a brief synopsis of the story without ever having actually read it. I think if it were just called The Great War or (Insert WWI title) I would have liked it more. You don’t really get to know the characters in any personal way. In fact, there were times I didn’t even know what friend it was that was dying.

Beautiful cinematography though. Good action. I just wish it was a more dialogue-driven film.

This is what it’s called in the American version. The original German translates to Nothing New on the Western Front meaning nothing has changed or nothing new to report. Doesn’t mean literally the Western Front is quiet. The reporting is quiet coming out of there. Meant to convey a sense of stalemate.

Not what I meant.
What I was saying is this movie was not at all the story in the book. Lots and lots of liberties taken. The entire first half of the book is just glossed over and ignored. Key events are altered or downright omitted.

It could have been it’s own story without taking the title of a book that bears little resemblance to what I just watched.

I disagree.

I personally think it was a good translation to the screen. Novels have to use words, movies don't have to.

The one issue I had was not fleshing out the Kantorek rhetoric it wasn't enough to support the kid's zeal in the movie. While the movie was long 5-10 more minutes of his politics and 5-10 more minutes of the boys thinking and discussing his oration to makes their choice make sense.

The other two main differences were Kat's and Paul's death.

I think Kat's death actually broadened and deepened the anti-war theme but the way the war infected a child.

Paul's death in the novel may have not played well on the screen in such an accurate depiction of trench warfare. That being said it did not have the powerful arrow pointing to the title of the novel/movie because his death did not occur on a "quiet day", though it was supposed to be a quiet day even before 11.

It reminds me of All the Kings Men and the '49 movie version. There is stark* contrast between the movie and novels ending but they both work and to me and the movie is worthy of the name.

*no pun intended

I liked the movie. Though I probably liked 1917 more to be honest.

Did you really feel like you knew or cared about Albert, Tjaden, or really any of the cast besides Paul?

The movie skipped over their relationships prior to the war, and omitted Paul’s leave home and the alienation he felt after fighting.

The entire plot line of their school master convincing them to enlist and being a shitty soldier himself later on.

My gripe is not with the quality of the movie, but with just how little it followed the book.

How do you leave it out his leave? That is the crucial point of the whole movie

i made it nearly 1/2 way through the movie before turning it off. its not bad but this type of movie has been done so many times that its old and no longer interesting. its not much different from 1917. same movie

That’s my whole point. I love the WWI setting and will watch almost anything with that. Enjoyed this movie.

But it was completely dumbed down from the source material. I don’t know why. The original story would have made it so much better.

Read a lot of Twitter reviews from people and it sounds like this film is fantastic. However, it does seem like it paints the horrors of war in an extremely accurate fashion and is a tough watch in that sense. Every comment I read basically said you will hate the concept of war after watching this movie
just finished it…this post summed it up, made me feel for those young ones on both side that are entering the meat grinder in Ukraine based on Putin’s desire to have some land. frick him.

"That's probably because the story is significantly better and has been successfully done in the past and 1917 was pure dog shite."

Just wondering...what is your major complaint(s) against 1917?

It was fantastic. Its one of the best war movies I've seen in a long time, right up there with 1917, though I think I liked this one a bit more. Beautiful scenery, fantastic acting, and the war scenes were really well done.
