Do I need any knowledge beyond the original 3 movies and the Hobbit? Meaning is it a Marvel thing where if you don't watch the Amazon show as well then you won't get it?

Feels like some generic fantasy world/plot with the Lord of the Rings IP pasted over top of it to be honest.

Aragorn isn't even born yet. Legolas is alive but would have zero part in this story (or shouldn't). Eowyn (Miranda Otto) apparently narrates, I'm sure regaling the children of Rohan (possibly while hiding in Helm's Deep) the great stories of heroism and victory. Or some such.

Welp, that's what Hera comes off as. Only Tolkien never mentions the name of Hammerhand's daughter. Which generally indicates she wasn't the heroic GUYladriel like figure we're getting in this movie.

It is an anime adaptation that will be in theaters. Honestly kind of risky for WB to do this. While anime movies have been doing better in the US, I am not sure if using the Lord of the Rings IP will greatly overcome this. And if they are planning on bringing in more Japanese fans to the IP, that has been harder to do than Hollywood would like to admit.

They did this in 1978 with Ralph Bakshi animating. A little bit different take than Peter Jackson’s live action, but still pretty impressive. If done correctly this could’ve been epic.

Rohan did have a generations of shield maidens as written by Tolkin. Has a bit of a girl boss feel but I will wait to pass judgement until after I see it on video. Will not pay for that in the movie theater.

Because I’m a Tolkien fan I’ll comment on topics regarding… Tolkien?
This isn’t like Amazon’s $1 billion, 5 season long series but just a two hour movie. Sure, I’ll watch a couple videos about it but once it’s gone, it will be forgotten.
But unlike with Amazon, this, at least has a host of talented people involved with the project. Those who really know Middle Earth. So that alone will probably help make it somewhat successful. Or maybe not, time will tell.
