Do I need any knowledge beyond the original 3 movies and the Hobbit? Meaning is it a Marvel thing where if you don't watch the Amazon show as well then you won't get it?

Based on the trailer, you wouldn't even need that knowledge.

Bait & switch. As I explained above.

Similar to calling a movie, a “MadMax saga” when there’s no MadMax.

In the worst Alien movie, they made Ripley a girlboss.

Exactly. Granted, Jackson, Boyens & Walsh come with top shelf cred. Potentially a return to glory for the story telling of Middle Earth. And this should be a welcome project at a time when Amazon is violating Tolkien’s work with its ridiculous adaptation.

When I first heard about it , I was full of hope and looking forward to it utterly clowning Amazon’s Rings of Power.

Oh well.

I looked it up, the director of this also directed the 5th episode from Star Wars: Visions "The Ninth Jedi".

Honestly I think Visions was well received on here.

He also has a lot of Ghost in a Shell on his resume, though looking at his list of films and animes; kind of feels like a stretch to call him legendary. I mean he's no Hayao Miyazaki or Shinichiro Watanabe.

It's hard to understand why companies keep going back to this proven failure.

last read the Hobbit about 3 years ago. I haven't watched or read any of the Lord of the Rings content in probably a decade, but I'm pretty sure there is unexplored regions or stories to tell.

I mean it doesn't sound like they are taking Aragorn's reign as king and suddenly pretending like some previously unmentioned female was actually the one leading the military and making all the decisions that Aragorn just benefitted from. That's some Star Wars shite right there.
If you dig into what Tolkien put in the appendices and books, this movie is staying completely within canon.

The fortress called Helm's Deep is called that, after King Helm. He had to hole up there during a winter, while Rohan was in the midst of a civil war.
The civil war was between he and his house (the House of Eorl, which remains the ruling House in LOTR), and someone from the Westfold, whose family tried to marry into the other House and gain power.
This 'unnamed woman' would be the daughter whose hand was being demanded, so it's completely relevant to flesh her out some.

As for her being a warrior, Eowyn makes the comment about being a shield maiden of the House of Eorl, and that's in the books as well as the movies. And while it probably surprised the reader, her training and valor don't seem to shock the other Rohirrim, just Merry (the outsider from the Shire). The Rohirrim are described as tall, fair haired, from the North, who love the sword and the glory of battle and victory... all things that at least to me suggest the Norse. They had women warriors.
Eowyn is the niece of the king, this chick is the daughter of the king- an even higher level socially, apparently trained in similar fashion.

All that to say- they haven't yet veered off course from Tolkien's writings, simply by gving this girl a name and some screen time.

I'm not a huge anime fan, not sure how well it will turn out. My concern is more about making it fit within both the Tolkien and anime genres, stylistically. I'll watch it, probably streaming unless I hear it's great and I have the time to get out and see it.

Its hard to understand why people get upset over a new lord of the Rings movie. Especially one from the studio that brought us the trilogy

I played the Shadow of War video game and it has Helms daughter in it at one point.

Both those games were awesome, should I be upset that they were made or not though? I need to know so I can go back and unplay them.

I’m explaining why I’m not looking forward to a movie I had previously circled on my calendar.

My argument was that I feel like any time a trailer shows a female in certain light, people cry girl boss.
If you are talking modern day, then you, and they, would be right.

"Girlboss" trope and "the girl that is the key to everything" trope are easily the 2 most abused tropes in film today.

As a side note. . .I am Borderlands might signal the end of those tropes. They used both to excess, that it almost seemed like bad satire

Now that certainly is a fair point I had not considered. The girl boss trope being so abused that it's almost a natural reaction to cringe. I mean I know anytime I see a ragtag group of unlikely allies in a movie trailer I assume it's a Guardian of the Galaxy ripoff where everyone is slightly unlikeable assholes who make quips every other line.

Its literally animated......

And we know she isn't the key to everything, so I don't know why you'd bring that up. Frodo is the one that was the key.
