Williams didn’t get benched for Ed Rubbert. That was the ‘87 strike year and the league used replacement players. Rubbert was the replacement QB.

Williams was benched that year but not for Rubbert.

Dilfer is so notoriously bad that people have Mandela effected themselves into thinking he was good in the superbowl

Funny thing is that Shannon Sharpe said the Ravens should have put up 50 points. Dilfer was leaving a lot of points on the board with atrocious throws like these the entire game.

Doug Williams.
...
His explosion of greatness in Super Bowl XXII was something of a one-off.

their RB Timmy Smith in same game was another simply amazing one-off performance
204 yards and 2 TDs.

nothing anywhere remotely close to that anywhere in rest of his career.

Doug Williams had to play the first five seasons of his NFL career with Tampa Bay.

And he led them to the NFC Championship game and followed that with finishing 8th, 9th and 6th in passing yards for the league despite having no help on offense.

He wasn't great but he wasn't terrible either. Couple his Bucs tenure with a good run in the USFL and he was an "average" QB for his era.

Think my vote would have to go to Jim Plunkett. Even during his time on a good Raiders team/franchise, he threw more INTs than TDs.

That was the era he played. No Mel Blount rule back then.

Bradshaw had 212 TDs and 210 INTs.

Mel Blount rule was in effect by the time Plunkett started his career with the Raiders, which was his best stretch. Still didn’t exactly light things up.

You guys never heard if Phil Simms and Joe Fluke-o? Doug Williams took a beating his entire career and got the Bucs to the playoffs a few times. He wasn't as bad as people think. Should include Neil O Donnell with his rigged INT , even though Pittsburgh didn't win. Virtually gave that game away.

I wouldn’t say Goff outplayed Brees, but boy Brees definitely shite the bed in that game. The ref’s no call definitely overshadowed Brees calling a 4th down audible only to throw it at Michael Thomas’ feet.

Dilfer & Hostetler didn't win MVPs. But I am surprised that a thread called "Worst QB to ever win Super Bowl MVP" has zero mention of Eli Manning. He's usually the first one mentioned

The right answer will be unpopular but it is Joe Namath. He threw 47 more interceptions in his career than touchdowns. Completion % of 50.1 (slightly higher than Williams' 49.5) passer rating of 65.5 (Williams is better at 69.4).

I think it is Namath then Williams as the worst two carriers for SuperBowl MVP QBs, at least statistically.

It’s between Doug Williams, Mark Rypien and Joe Flacco.

Rubbert was a scab

…Nevermind. I didn’t read that dude didn’t win MVP. I change my answer to Joe Namath. He won Super Bowl 3 with 206 passing yards and didn’t throw a single TD pass and was named MVP

Yep. Williams wasn’t benched for him unless you consider the work stoppage a benching.
